Low air noise in Recording Chain

Hi, I'm using a U87 mic into an avalon 737 then into a apogee ensemble. For some reason im getting a low air noise.
When I boost the gain on the pre amp is when the noise is noticeable.
I already tried a few thing, I changed the bulbs on the pre amp, I tried bypassing the pre amp and use the ensemble pre amps (noise still there)
I tried using a different mic, I tried an electric acoustic guitar through the line in on the avalon. noise is still there.
One thing i noticed is that it only makes the noise when an instrument is plugged in. (mic or line in) also if i turn down the High-Mid EQ on the avalon the sound will go away but by doing that it takes away character from the instrument.
Somebody told me to switch all my cables to mogami cables and that should work, but id hate to make the investment on 100 dollar cables and still have the problem.
If i record the vocals at -30db you cant hear the noise but once i add compression and gain it will come back. Its not noticeable to the artist that record with me but I can hear it and it bothers me. Thanks, any help will be greatly appreciated

This is one of those troubleshoot moments. The face it is only happening when something is plugged in implies where the issue is. Try other cables sure. That may or may not be the issue.
