Thread Starter | Nuked (highly compressed) drums. U.S. based Hip-Hop or R&B examples
I really dont compress drums. Its rare. Maybe when I have a mix where the layered drums dont fit well with each other, and need them to gel better. Its light compression then. I have probably gone for multiple years without compressing drums, let alone squasing them. Actually I dont think I have ever nuked vocals either.. I cant remember doing so at least. Eons ago I learned how to nuke drums. It was a technique that I never found useful. Thinking about it, am not sure where I would use it other than during NY / parallel compression. So can you guys point me to some songs with nuked drums in a U.S. based hip hop or R&B context? 90's or early 2000's preferred, as I dont listen to much of what is currently charting. If it happens to be your song, feel free to add any commentary as to why you chose this method. I guess I really dont use a lot of compression at all to be honest. Not that I plan to start after this thread, however I am just curious. Last edited by jrides; 5th February 2012 at 02:54 PM.. Reason: Clarify a term used. |

In Hip Hop - not too often as the samples are generally already pretty compressed. I might compress a little to reshape the transient a bit. Pop dance music, I'll squash em' for heavy compression - mainly because there's a demand for the mix to be very loud. And I'll do A LOT of compression to the vocals. Rock, yeah, I'll nuke the drums pretty often. Had a track up in the check out my mix thread - the song was called "The Mix" by Union Shop. There were a couple of spots where I slammed the drums.

I have done this on a rare occasion for a special impact moment. I definately get that. There is so much talk about nuking and squashing thiings on this board that it made me wonder which songs I liked employed heavy use of this technique. I couldn't easily think of any. Maybe I just don't like squashed to death lifeless instruments or I'm forgetting songs that I do like. I dunno. I couldn't find your song searching that thread Story, but I'm pretty sure I'm familiar with what you are talking about. Feel free to post it here though if you want. Oh, yeah, it's for effect. For what it's worth, there's equal talk of NOT squashing the life out of things on this forum as well. Anyway, you hear the heavy compression on the drum fills, and on the break between the first chorus and first verse. | |

Thanks Story, Not just talk on here though. This all started as I was looking at some compressors. Notice the blurb on a few talking about smashing drums. I got to thinking of whether I wanted such a device. And when would I ever want to do that? If I ever do, im guessing I probably don't need a dedicated hardware box for it. OTB is based more on immediate needs. Unless I'm missing something. |

Sadix I'm pretty self promo to some degree is frowned upon. Most just put it in their sign. I'm not interested in smashing drums. Historically I have found little to no value in it with sample based hip hop. I'm just opening the floor for others to show me hip hop songs with them that I may be forgetting about. The song criteria is listed above. Trying not to be closed minded about the technique. |
