Yamaha Motif software alternative?

Hi,

This question was asked once before (Found a thread) but became a flame war. What is a nearest software alternative to Yamaha Motif now?

Thanks,
sd-cd

What sounds are you concerned about? Just synth sounds?
The more acoustic sounds like strings and acoustic guitar patches would be more difficult. But in all honesty you can get NI's komplete, have more sounds than you can imagine and forget about the motif sounds.
They've been used sooooo much already anyways.

I remember when I first got my Motif ES6, it was like the best acoustic and electric instrument sounds ever in a keyboard! Today I prefer to use Kontakt based libraries for those types of sounds, getting Komplete 8 would be a good start. It really depends on what sounds you like from the Motif in the first place. If you are more into the layered Combination patches, you may want to look into Omnisphere instead. Just some suggestions.

Synths and strings.

F Major and bigyo thanks.
Komplete 8 is too expensive for me (even though I know it's quite a bang for a buck but still). I will look at Omnisphere also.

Get an old version Of komplete off eBay from a reputable seller and make sure it's in the box with the serial. That's how I bought mine. Once you get it, it'll take a lil bit for NI to transfer the license (2-3 days max).
Anyways I've got komplete 5 or 6 and it's still VERY relevant. It's like 50-60 gigs of sounds. only catch is kontakt player 4 is needed for a lot of sample libraries nowadays and I think that's in komplete 7 and up.
BUT, those sample libraries are usually the big ones. The $500 ones and up, usually orchestral. And at least half of those sample libraries will work with the free kontakt player.

Alternatively you could just get a good synth like alchemy, sylenth, predator, massive (which is included in komplete) and for strings it's usually kontakt sample libraries. I use logics stock strings which are pretty awesome.
Quality Strings are usually pretty expensive Third party. Sample tank would be a pretty good option IMO and it has lots of other instruments and is still quite relevant.

Maybe someone else could suggest some other fairly inexpensive vst with good strings.

Sample tank is garbage...for motif sounds. try halion sonic, its made by the same company and is suppose to be based off the motif for sounds.

East West - Complete Composers.

Leans more on the organic side of things. If the synths in Komplete are not a major drawcard then I would recommend this as it betters Komplete easily un my experience. You can even pick and choose the final components.

Word to the wise, EW cust service was a nightmare to deal with, nice people once you find your way through the labyrinth though. This was a year ago mind you. they may have picked their game up.

Yeah, I have Sampletank 2xl and I wouldnt recommend it as an alternative to the motif. That being said, based on what theyve done with the new ipad version, the upcoming sampletank 3 might be up there with the Motif. I have Komplete as well. It is definitely a good alternative to the motif. Not as fast to load patches though. Like F major mentioned if it is moreso Combi synth stuff youre after then grab Omnisphere. Halion sonic is also a good choice but it has a dongle and doesnt come in RTAS format. If you have protools definitely mess with Xpand 2 and Structure.

Thank you Guys!

I will definitely look into Omnisphere and NI Komplete (even older version).

Yes, I have Pro Tools but mainly use Live, so don't want to complicate things.
EastWest Complete Composers Collection is too expensive for me.

Hmm...Halion Sonic - have to hear this.

Halion Sonic is literally a Motif for the computer. I had halion sonic but gave it to my son, i have a motif xs and so I am speaking on experience. Halion sonic is basically a motif. made by same company and team who designs the motif. It even uses some of the same samples for the rom.

Any steinberg vsts. Such as Halion Sonic, Halion Orchestra, Halion Pianos, etc. This is due to the fact that recently yamaha and steinberg merged. Some sound designers from yamaha who worked on the motif developed the sounds for vsts such as Halion Sonic.

hey halion sonic is great it is a nice and easy to use rompler with a build in va synth..but compared to my mox 8 , the mox 8 wins....
i don t understand why the mox only need a few hundred megabyte while halion sonic needs 12gig and the mox still wins.
i mean they have a few things in common...

Komplete 8 Ultimate for acoustics and decent synths, Omnisphere for outstanding synths and pads, Trilian for the BEST BASS SOUNDS. Those three are a staple in my studio as well as every studio I work in across NYC. I personally take it to the next step with a large selection of EastWest libraries. Everything else is just for messing around. I use these more than my Motif XF (which I only have for just a handful of patches like babywah, touch Wah, and EPs).

I must add that Vienna Ensemble pro lets you run these plugins at a higher capacity than directly from your DAW. It's a must have to run several instruments with effects without a single click or pop and minimal latency.

You should seriously try some of the motif libriaries. Some have some pretty good patches, not to mention upgraded pianos and they include upgraded samples for the rom.

the best software for the Motif is

KARMA Motif Software:: Karma-Lab

Available in a few weeks for 199 usd .

Surely this will add new life to your existing soundsets within the Motif.

Add another 1000 or so GE 's to your arsenal of arpeggios.

Plus you can record the output of the Karma back into the Motifs sequencer.

Cheers
