ebay tape machines what to look for?

I got an extra $1000 and I was hoping I could get a little ebay tape machine to mellow out my digital transients!

What is a good tape machine to get?

Easy to maintain would be nice!

Anyone?

What a good little 2 track tape machine for quick sonic boost aka natural tape compression?

For $1000, nothing. Stay digital, have your mastering engineer dump your masters to tape and see if you like it.

Almost, you can get some decent Studer 2 tracks for $2000 - $2500. And recently there was an Ampex ATR 102 1/4" for $2500 or so. We used to track some overdubs to the ATR and then sample them into the MPC. Super fat samples. You could also track stuff to the 2 track and lay it back to the DAW. Just need to find a decent way to shift it reliably.

Probably an A80 or something along those lines... but, it will cost you $2000 just to ship the thing!
