Need some help....Just had a 5-6 vocal booth built & control room for intermediate studio open to local clients... Have about 2k to spend on vocal chain I do hiphop/R&b some pop & ironically would love to do like contemporary worship =) I am looking to achieve a close to or somewhat close to Dr.Dre mix. The vocals seem to sound so natural, clear & big. With 2k this may not be reachable. However this is the budget so whatever the best I can get for 2k is what I'm looking for. Looking for something like Mic--Pre--Conversion... stand alone converter or interface. However is the best way to go.. I have an iMAC 4gigs ram Hs80's Well treated rooms |

But I do recommend however to get your hands on a Shure SM7b for hip hop vocals.

Dre uses a c800g, so you would need more than 2k for that. My c800g into 1073 for rap has that kind of Dre sound. No other mic sounds like that. Buy a u87 and start recording! |

| Chris do you think any of the JJ audio mics are similar to the u87 or the telefunken ak47 as well. I see the u87 on ebay for about 2k but I'm trying to buy a good preamp as well.

| Project Code CL2465 | I would say the Akita to me, and many others, sound really similar to the c800g, has more pronounced mids than the c800g. Let's be honest, even a mic like the c800g needs to be Eq-ed because it has monstruous bass! The Akita would be the best alternative.

| Thanks Chris, in your opinion, what would make a good pre for warm hip hop vocals on the Akita?

| Project Code CL2465 | I personally use an AMS Neve pre, I'd say any pres such as the Avedis MA5, BAE 1073mp, and other "Neve style" clones would work with it. I think you can't go wrong with the Akita.

I've had an Akita for...man I guess coming up on two years now? Had it tucked away for a few months. Pulled it back out last night for a session: Akita -> aurora audio GTQ -> MC77 -> LA2A -> interface. Needless to say, the Akita will be hanging out on the stand again. I've never personally used a c800g, but there was a shootout here that compared the two which resulted in me taking the plunge with the Akita. Very easy to make vox sit in and cut through a mix. Best of luck |

Maybe: AKG c414 -> ua 710 twin finity-> steinberg mr816x Mr816 has got nice preamps itself + ua gives you flexibility of tube and circuit. Sent from my GT-I9000 using Gearslutz.com |
