Damn, Is your keyboard stuck on full velocity? Anyways... Can't you save to 'cassette' but just save it as an audio file on your PC? |

I don't think you'd have to resample your stuff - saving to 'cassette' would store your info as (sample) data not as a listenable audio file or beat... There's some stuff on dxarmy.com in the SP forum about this. Sounds like its quicker than the old commodore drives. |

I was wondering about some kind of SD or CF for the SP12 turbo - but guess as its not got scsi or even the floppy of the 1200 a lot of mods are gonna be non-existent. any mods might require you have the original commadore 5.25" (or whatever it is) and moding that. with the price of the 12 staying lower than the 1200 a modded 12 would be appealing...

No storage mods for the sp12 up to now... My workflow with the SP12 is ... sample into it from PC ... make a finished song....move on. I do organize my samples, so I know which went into the sp on which song... but it would be such s*it to redo ... that it forces me to make songs as perfect as possible before moving on to others. ..actually I don't put new sample into it that much, I often treat it like an 808..I've got some sounds in there that are so nice, and can be repitched for other songs...so just reuse them on a bunch of songs. When you turn it off, all your sounds and seqs/songs are still right there, without needing to load from floppy! I was tempted to sell the SP12 and get a 1200.. changed my mind though.. If you really need to save your sounds get the 1200.. cos the commodore drives are CRAP. Also, recording individual sounds from your SP to an MPC/PC.. that will take t least 50% of the SP magic away, if that's the plan, just get some SP drumkits from goldbaby, and save some cash ![]() Ooh, and just to add: the tape backup... also takes forever, and I could never get it to work on mine. |

Cassette save is a cinch. Just like recording any other audio track. Click record, then push save to cassette on the SP. you'll hear some funky sounds and it does take about 2-5 min put its a digital back up!!! To load from cassette is the same push load from cassette on the SP then push play on your DAW. Nice feature I know several folks wouldn't mind having on the 1200.

I don't have an SP but I have used two other samplers that didn't have more than a floppy. I honestly just tracked to my computer every time, never saved. Even on my MPC 1000, I rarely save, just keep it going until I am done. I only save to not loose my work, not to come back. To me, I only love card readers for the ability to load samples, especially if you have used a computer for a long time.

you could try to use the 1571 istead of the 1541. The 1541 was designed to work with the VC20 computer and I've read that there was a "break" installed to work with the VC20. My guess: the 1571 (designed for the commodore 128) don't have this "break". But it also depends how fast the SP12 can provide the data. Dont forget to search the SP1200 forum! peace |

![]() ...Anyway for me at least, even if it did work... no way am I killing 12+mins to save sample data, that's enough time to make half a song. | |

If money is not an issue I would suggest getting the SP1200 just to have one. I use mine everyday and love it but bang for your buck it isn't great. One of the best samplers for your money is the ESI 32. I use it like it is an SP1200. Once you start using it you won't think of the SP12 or 1200 again.

$600 is way too much. They go for $75 - $150. I like it so much as you can work really fast and it sounds fantastic. Basic setup would be Turntable and mixer, midi keyboard/controller, ESI 32 with 32MB memmory and a SCSI device to save to(make sure it has a SCSI card). I use zip disk. It doesn't have an internal sequencer so you'll need one. Here is how I use it. Plug your turntable into the ESI32 and go digging. As soon as you sample something it places it to the keyboard so you don't have to assign it. You can quickly trim it and move on to the next sound. If you find for example a piano sample you can assign it to one key or a small section of the keyboard or accross all keys. So I end up with a huge bunch of different sounds. with an SP1200 and a floppy you end up with like 10 - 15 sounds. With the ESI 32 and a Zip disk you can spend weeks maxing it out. The you hook it up to your sequencer and go nuts! It samples in CD quality in stereo or mono or 22000K in stero or mono. If you want gritty sounds you sample drums at 45RPM at 22000K in mono. Once you sample you tune the drums down. If you want it more gritty you can lower the sample rate to 11000K There are other tricks to get real gritty such as manually spinning the turn table really fast and sampling it. The filters are great on it. I add a low pass filter to most of my kicks but adjust the attack of the filter so you maintain the initial punch of the sound. This is just like assigning it to out put 1 or 2 on the SP1200. Ok thats enough typing for now...
