Thread Starter | SM7B and Apogee Duet 2
Hey guys I have a question. I know that the SM7B needs a lot of gain to really get it going. My duet 2 gives it that gain but there seems to be a problem. When turn my duet past 40 or higher there seems to be some hissing going on and it's get's louder and louder. I need at least about 50 or more to get the proper level for recording. When I set it to 30, it sounds clear and good but that is to low for recording levels. So I was thinking, should I get a mic pre and then hook it up to the Duet 2? I'm thinking this might eliminate the problem? If you have any suggestion please feel free to do so. Thank you ahead of time. |

Duet 2 has plenty of gain to power for the Sm7b. The sound you are hearing could be a problem with your Duet, a ground loop, your room noise (is your AC on?), or a couple other things.

Remember you can always hit it with a gain plug or a limiter later of you need volume... Sent from my GT-I9000 using Gearslutz.com | |

My room is actually treated pretty well. So i don't think it's room noise. How could it be a groud loop when its only plugged into my IMAC 27?(Just curious)The rms seems to be hovering around 50-40ish very low.

I did what you said but it still tends to exist. Do i need a mic pre? I really do like the mic but it's just to much noise and makes it annoying to recording with all that hiss just to get to the proper levels

Ok well i plugged it in a different socket and it seemed to have went away. I had my headphones turn down to -15 which i didn't noticed. When i went to 0 the sound became apparent again. :(
