Depends on the sound you are looking for.
Try them and see which you like best.

summing with big names

im looking to get asumming mixer right now for the money i see dangerous d box as best solution, i am also looking at some big names like the api 8200 , neve 8816 , chandler mini rack......is it worth spending top dollar for those names or will the dangerous give same results ? i know its hard to tell from shoot outs but from what i can hear theres basicly no diffrence. what i like about the never is has vu metters an 16 channels where d box ha sno meters an 8 channel.. im think chandler is just way to much money since im working with as digi003 rack, what im basicly looking for is more head room, more separation in sounds, an more punch/heavyness which i know is done with eq but im sure getting out of digital should help .

Search the forum, no offence but when I was asking the same questions... I found plenty on the topic of summing.

I just used and old A&H mixer and could only pass on second hand info as opposed to experience U hear the Neve is great as are the SSL units (just missed out on one) but the D2B will do it too

Pretty much the same way any summing unit is different. Seems to add more air and space.

Always look to find a thread discussing summing boxes and then post your question. If you do that and after many hours no one responds - you possibly have a case to start a new thread, but 80% of the time if it is a relatively good question you will get a response before the thread is off of the first page.

A summing box is not going to give you what you are looking for. It's the last 5% type of thing. You can get those things ITB all day every day. You have to learn how to mix, basically. It takes time and effort. Invest in yourself. Rent time with qualified engineers. Watch them work and ask questions. There is no magic box that will get you separation and more punch, and digital headroom is all about gain staging. Most hip hop records today are done ITB. To get the full advantages of summing you will need quality converters added to the price.

I went through this stage a few years ago and the only thing that helped was I grabbed up 7 summing boxes for tests in a few weeks span. I wound up getting none. It was not worth it. A few years later I got a Chandler because I needed a summing box to integrate my hardware outboard. Even with that 60% of the time I stay all ITB.

Also, there are literally tons of discussions all over GS (not just hip hop forum) on every summing box ever made and every comparison ever thought of. Just do a search.

I had the Neve summing box. Its sounded really great and gave me a neve vibe. I have heard the dangerous stuff is less colored however, I wouldn't say they are on the same level. The Dbox is aimed more at prosumers and is much cheaper then the neve. Check out the SPL mixdream.

Had the 8816. Tried everything i could with it. It gave me nothing but problems. Had to take it to dave clark twice to be checked. It didnt give much of a sonic improvement over itb. It was a total piece of shit imo. I got rid of it and got a console and never looked back. Listen and decide for yourself if its what you need like and want. Thought it was for me but it didnt work out. No comment or experience with the dangerous

To the OP. I think not a lot of useful information has been given, so I will try to help because not many are saying why they like or don't like summers. I have used long enough to form a initial opinion(3 weeks to a month on loan) the Audient Sumo, Dangerous 2buss and D-Box and a couple of custom jobs.

First of all Summing boxes will be most influenced by the tone in front of them , usually your convertors unless EQ, or comps are in line! If the box is more transparent like the dangerous the convertors will effect the tone even more! So sometimes the question becomes how does several channels of your D/A conversion sound plus or minus extra color from the summing unit(8816, chandler) or signal processors(1176, Manley EQ ETC.). That plus many other variables like your monitoring, preference for style of working will effect how your like the summing boxes.

Also how you appraoch mixing with the summing box will effect your experience of them. If you find you have the same amount of plug ins on a mix you started using the summing box as an only in the box mix, chances are something is wrong. I say that because most people experience using atleast a few less tools(plug ins) when doing a mix this way. It's because you get some of the stuff that we create (ADD) with plug ins to for free when you use this method.

OK what I noticed the most with the Dangerous 2BUSS which was the best sounding of all the ones I used was that I got 3 things of the bat. Punchier more defined bottom from the center. This made kick and vocals sound a bit taller in the mix. Some more seperation of sounds in the Panorama, very Big Console like! Last, Plugins EFX like reverb just sounded more expensive and pleasant.

Some of the summing units just sounded different but not better than ITB! The larger Dangerous 2Buss Did however do something to the sonic spectrum and center signal strength. Also it has and AMP with 6DB boost and I was using that and driving the 2 Buss. Like this it had a feel not unlike a large console. Things set back slightly while still being present and could feel taller! That's my observation.

first I wanna say all those things I said i noticed can be replicated in the box with plug ins. It takes skills and know how. Also some mixes don't need that stuff and can benefit from the sterile ITB canvas.

Conclusion. depends on what you want from the Summing box and if you know how to get it! If you do chances are you can get a good to greate mix in the box as well both require substantial skill! Also you won't know till you try it in your place for a few mixes. Espeecially starting the mix through all the gear your gonna use. Sorry this was so F*&^ in long but I wanted to help.
