iPhone.... for rap vocals?!

I am constantly writing... There's always a beat going on in my head. I usually forget the flow by the time I get home. That shit bothers me to no ends. I wasn't smart enough to use one of my phones to record it! LOL! I recently started doing that and I'm really impressed by the iPhone mic (vs Droid X, LG G2x, and Atrix).

"That awkward moment" when your iPhone sounds better than your other "studio."

The beat is from a GS member Sotsirc. He sent me a lot of dope stuff. I'm really impressed by his beats. Excited to be collaborating with him.

Sounds to me like... exactly what it was, recorded on a phone.
I love the ability to capture ideas on the fly, but I'm not quite sure what point you're trying to make other than that.

Listen to my set up and you'd swear that it was done through an old Nokia while playing snake. LOL!

I have a lot of production tools on this phone that I never use. I've never really put together any ideas on it, because, well, I always forget about them. I think I'm going to try to record something on it. Like put together an idea in iMaschine or NanoStudio. I flirted with the idea of buying GarageBand, but I don't use the two Mobile DAW's that I have right now.

I'm intrigued, to say the least.

Jay - your killin me.

Seriously man I haven't heard anything you have put out that was bad enough to compared it to the sound of an iPhone. This sounded like a scratch vocal on an iPhone - everything else just sounded like a new person to recording who hasn't quiet mastered it yet. You need more faith in your ability's.

It captures the low end in my voice nicely. the other mics I own make me sound like I have a whine in my voice. I cannot explain it. This recording was done in the car at a drive-thru. I wonder how it would sound in a treated room. Sounds like a great experiment. People are so intuitive these days. They're shooting videos with iPhones, why not record a song with it just to push the limits of a mobile set up? I know that'd KILL some people, but it's it'd really show off someone's creativity.

I'm pretty sure RedOne stated that some of GaGa's vocal parts from the first album (albeit only a few) were recorded using the built-in mic on their MacBook pro. It can be done. But it's not where I would put my focus if my main goal was to create great sounding music.

I would have to look at specs before I just shoot out numbers - but I can almost promise you - sample rate, bit depth, frequency range, and a bunch of other shit is reeeeally limited on an iPhone. Low end boost can be achieved without Not to mention you can't really mix on an iPhone, or have plug ins and shit.

Maybe you should try getting some new people over to the house who know what they are doing? If you know anyone who knows someone and they know how to track and what not you can get some major points from them.

I literally learn new shit every single session I do. I even learn from people who have no idea what they are doing.... The other day (when I made that "I'll freestyle that part..." thread) I was learning more about being an engineer just by sitting threw a session with some new artists... how they operate... how they have recorded with people before me... just shootin the breeze and having no idea what I was thinking they were helping me become a better engineer... My point is, we learn everyday (at least if we allow ourselves to), and we will continue to do so until the day we die. One day soon enough you will find out what you need to know to get a great recording.

If you don't like the way you sound on your blue (bluebird is it?), can you still return it? Let them know you want to try out a bunch of mics until you find one you like. Look for one with a real deep presence. I would find out what mic Tyler the Creator uses - you sound similar, and like that is the sound you are going for.
