Minimoog or Plugin?

E-40 ft. Problem, IamSu!, YG - Function(Prod. By Trend Of L.O.S.)(NEW FIRE!! 2012) - YouTube

The first track I've heard with an obvious Minimoog bass line. Does anyone think they can tell if this is the real thing or software? I own a Mini, but I can't tell in this case.

PS, I'm not referring to the Voyager.

edit: The more I listen the more I think it's an actual Minimoog.

this goes back to those discussions about whether to plunk down the 4K for the synthesizer or a few hunny for the plugin.

I think alot of people get caught up in the hype either way and don't realize how many elements need to come together to make something sound great and that it's really a matter of preference. Great mixing doesn't get enough shine either. I don't own a mini so I can't say how close it is but the moog plug by arturia is not too bad.

for me, there was something visceral about owning an original Minimoog. I mean, if I had a chance to buy, say a Studio Electronics MidiMoog (which has a real Minimoog sound card), at half the price, I would still buy the Mini.

in reality, MidiMoogs and MidiMinis are going for as much as the real thing.

I agree with you on the mini I'd love to own one myself, I just think if people are on a budget or have no experience programming they shouldn't dismiss plugs. Be interesting to find out what was used on the track though.

That's definitely the real thing.

No plug can give that depth I hear.

I don't know anything about the producer, much less know him but if he is from the Bay, I likely can have someone ask him, especially if he works with 40 as I know people in that camp. His name make it very hard to search him out.

Nobody is gonna care if it's a plugin or not. I've heard plugin synths that are dead on to my ears and if I can't tell I doubt that the average consumer could tell or care.

yes and no. is the avg consumer gonna think "hmm, is this a plugin or a real analog vintage synth?"

of course not.

but they might think "wow! that bass is fat as hell!"

will they do that on a plugin? maybe yes, maybe no.

my question is if anybody on here knows which this song has? after listening to the Arturia plugin, I am pretty sure this is the real thing.

Who said its minimoog or minimoog emulation? Sounds like random synth that popped from dudes sequencer while smoking blunt. I cant picture any of these guys in 2k12 to mess with outboard synth without midi.

As a Minimoog owner, I am saying it. Are you familiar with the Moog sound? This sounds like a sawtooth or triangle sawtooth with 2 osc detuned. And it has the rawness of the Mini.

and lots of Mini's have MIDI, including mine. There's also the Studio Electronics stuff that comes with MIDI. The older synths had actual Minimoog boards taken from real Minis.

Moog plugin sounds good. Although IMO it doesn't sound as in your face/raw
As as the real ones or the Little Phatty, it'll probably sit in the mix better, you can dial up as many instances as your computer can handle, plus all your settings are saved in the session so it's easy to tweak things. Can't go wrong either way you can get the plugin and buy a used moog

Could be either. That's a classic sounding patch..quite a basic preset style patch..

You could achieve that from a good mix/master and arturia no problem. A voyager could also get that no problem..

It's the more overdriven patches that are harder to replicate. additionally the patch has almost no release so you cant hear a natural sway and swing in the signal like the original mini.

Bless

something has to be said for the experience of playing an actual minimoog vs a plug in emulation. i used minimoog emulations for years, and when i finally bought one, i understood why they are so coveted. instantly it was bliss compared to playing the emulations. I find the real thing makes the plugins sound sharp in an unpleasing way. of coarse its all relative to your perspective, but i think the experience you get out of playing something effects the outcome of what you create. dont get me wrong, the minimonsta has some great sounds, but it doesn't quite do the same thing. its similar to having a singer in the vocal booth, if they (some, not all) don't sound huge in their headphones, they might not get as inspired.

I don't agree. I could be wrong, because I've only listened to a few plugin demos on youtube, but it has way too much depth and character for a plugin, imo.

Voyager sound is too clean for this, at least in my experience. I can't describe it, but the patch even sounds like it's coming from an old instrument. As soon as I heard it, I thought "Minimoog."

if you're convinced it's a Voyager, I'd love to hear a demo or have you post the patch settings so I could try it.

I dont think it's anything. I think it's a basic type moog patch which with some processing could be achieved in either a plug or a voyager. I have no idea if it's the original.

Generally the minimoog sounds driven. Well it was when i played with one - which was for a few hrs. I have recently looped the audio signal in the voyager post some advice from retrofreak and it really does sound like a minimoog - or close to.

But now you ask! I think it's a fair request..I mean to try and replicate with a voyager. I'll have a play when i have some downtime and feedback buddy.

Please note! To get a soft synth sounding close is a lot more effort! I have heard some great examples of this but dont think i have the ability to do that. On a voyager i think i could.
