i think its great for hip hop...
i can make it swing
i was a SP/MP guy for 15 years and switched to LOGIC for the last 2-3.
man...buying the tempest was the best thing i've done
its a breeze making grooves...pitching the drums etc
the sound of the analog filters smfh... my LOGIC beats sound thin in comparison (and i was "sampling" through my 2192).
that's great to hear, as i'll be running my tempest synced with logic once i get it, maybe combining it with my breaks library. are you still using it with logic? how does it cut into your mixes?
Hey 10 Ton, what's going on? I was wondering a couple of things about the Tempest, seeing as you've owned it for at least a few months now:
1) How does it pertain to your experience with hip-hop? Has it changed the way you play? Do you like it for hip-hop?
Not really changed, just added more fun with beat-fx. 16 beats mode is pretty cool, specially with unquantize. Yes, I think its going to be a future classic. Drums period=hip hop.
and...
2) How does it cut through the mix? You mentioned the low-end isn't as deep as Moog, but is it deep enough for your tastes?
Drums knock and have got that boom, im just not as good with synthesis. I retract that previous statement about that low end. Its possible because I can get kicks to sound huge. Its the other sounds...This isnt a preset machine, your going to have to get to work programming. There are some user libraries floating around the DSI forum.
3) How do you track it? Do you like using individual outs to individual pres?
I track it straight to a soundcard using the individual outs if I want effects. Sometimes I just go stereo, big mono to tape.
Man I'm still behind on these pups but I received some stems for a project couple weeks back that were made with temp. Sounded huge in the bottom. I need to check this guy out! Yes I Still want the op too haha. How has it been living and learning these sexy little thangs 10?
Anyone know if u can sample on the op- while the beat is playing? No one is talking about this aspect
I think thats the only way it samples? You have to record it to a track, than you lift and copy.

Sent from my HTC Desire S using Gearslutz App
Cool, every new feature makes it much more better. The tempest is getting close to almost all the features. I want to see unquantized recording! I been using double time tempo lately, thats the "Roger Linn Sound"lol TE just implemented a sync with ableton.

Thanks for your input and I can't wait to place that order! Countdown till that elusive tax return
If you want to buy in the US, I can refer you to the place and person I got it from. CHEEEEEEP!!!!!

I appreciate the offer but I'll be buying it through sweetwater and putting it on my sweetwater card, so I can't pay upfront. Hehe, wish I could!

Thats not what i mean. I want to sample something & mess with the envelope, spread the tuning out
Over keys, etc....not just to loop. Do you have to Stop the sequencer in order to sample?
The tombola, endless, and pattern sequencer? Ill try that, never did it that way before. If you want to just hear it you could also tape it to a track.
just had my first play with the tempest...:O Don't really know what to say. All of you geek tech heads who are judging this product by the price tag and spec owe it to yourself to try it out!
MY GAWD. The rom samples through the analogue converters were ..
I cant knock it - sounded incredible to me. Saving moneys now!!
Ordering mine this week. This is the first product for which I've actually read the entire manual before making the purchase. Can't wait!
Nice man very very nice! The modulation realtime did me. Some of the beats I messed with I would literally drop straight into a track. The whole thing is inspiration.
Just ordered it (Tempest) yesterday morning! Fed-Ex tracking says it should be here sometime tomorrow. I've actually READ the manual for a product I've bought this time... and I can't wait to be all over it.
Anybody have anything to add about the OP-1??? Has the charm worn off???
I might take the dive on it.
I owned one for a few months, but decided it wasn't for me. It can make some nice sounds and is really well built and designed. The 4 track limitation is what made me decide to sell it. If I have put together something I want to take further in my DAW, I don't want to recreate it what I've already put time into. If it supported a minimum of 8 tracks it would be a keeper for me. That's enough to have kick snare hats percs on individual tracks and still have tracks for melody and bass. Then file transfer to DAW and continue. I just found the 4 tracks to limiting to put time into.
For the same price you could get and iPad with much more flexibility and export options, that's what I did.
Its been about a year, I still love it. It does have a sound of its own. The bass is huge. New os updates are always good. They have a new mode which you can control ableton with it. The info from Live shows up on the OP1. Random thoughts....
Tempest is actually on the list now..I have messed with them on three ocassions and every time I leave the venue I wish i was taken her with me. For synthesised drums and much more it really is a benchmark as far as i am concerned.
i've basically used only the op-1 and sp303 for the past year to create music.
I mainly use the op-1 as a sound module and the sampler mainly for drum duties. I record and sample everything into the 303 for beat construction.
the op-1 is fun and you can get really creative with the synths, fx, and seq. The build quality is superb imo and the battery life is awesome.
now my main gripes so far:
-there is no way to directly hook up a midi keyboard to the thing. you have to route it via mini usb to your computer then to your keyboard. the problem with that is you get a ground loop/hum with the usb plugged connected. Since I record into my sampler and use lots of compression, the hum is very noticeable. So that is my main gripe. The little keys are fun to jam on but when i want to explore diff key signatures and chords its a pia due to lack of keys.
-for some reason, maybe due to my incompetent skills or lack of more creativity, after using it as my main synth i feel like im exhausting the possibilities of creating new sounds that are new to me. As in everything is starting to sound the same no matter how i tweak the settings of the synth or that the range of creating diff sounds are limited (small sweet spot). Maybe I need to put it away for a bit. Again this may be due to personal issues.
But other than that i still love the thing. I'm probably never going to sell it. The TE team seem like they will be adding more features in the near future. They have been adding new modules and stuff while listening to requests from the community which is fantastic.
Even though it may seem hipster-ish or look like a toy, it's a legit musical tool.
