This is one of those situations that is iffy. Even your good friends will somehow "accidentally" pass your beat off, be it that they don't see the value of it, or they may end up in a studio and the engineer may decide he wants to resell if he is shady etc. That's the best case where you loose control of your beat. Some people will resell, as they have the whole session, etc, in a much more malicious way. When it's free, it's hard to put that "block up" and wait for everything to go through for copyright. When someone pays, you can have a bit more faith that they are not going to be trying to screw you but you are still playing with the chance something bad can happen. On the flip side, just because you gave the beat to someone before you have an official copyright, that doesn't mean you can't copyright it after the fact. They can theoricially copyright it they day they get it but that is pretty illegal and most people are not willing to do that, even with a full session of audio files. If you are giving them the actual program session, that is different, and NEVER DO THAT. I would just say the truth. You can only give them a 2 track until you copyright your material. In the future, get it done before you need to. Most people who run into issues with stolen beats and generally getting taken advantage of are the people who don't go through the necessary steps to protect themselves. You just kind of attract that. That doesn't mean a work with a copyright won't end up stolen but it's going to be much easier to deal with. Lastly, trust your instincts, in general. I am assuming you have concerns as you are asking the question. Where do the concerns lye? If it doesn't "feel right", it probably isn't right. I am speaking both from a perspective of logic, and my own experiences. The last one is the most important to me. Most mistakes I have made, I felt like it was a mistake before it got bad. There are plenty of people I feel comfortable sending work to that I have yet to copyright, not that it is a good idea, but sometimes it just happens to go that way. Their are plenty of other people who I don't feel comfortable working with again, even if everything is totally inline and I am getting paid. So there is a judgement/gut feeling factor here as well. |

Hey, if you want to collab with me, just send me a zip file or upload all your stuff on soundcloud, it's not that complicated really. I don't steal anyone's work. No need to post it on here, I deal with a lot of people on GS and I've never had any problems with any of them. I am a very professional person and I don't send any files before I get approval. If you don't want to collab that's fine, I understand. I'll collab with other people. And yes make sure you copyright your work! |

Send them mp3's with your tags on them. Then copyright. This way, they don't have ur session or the audio files, but they can still write and record to it before the final deal is worked. |

I'm going to be more trusting of a long term Gs member that I've maybe interacted with a little. You get the feel for a person from their posts if you pay attenention. It's cool tho. I take more realistic precautions with others but regardless ..... I just want to jam, write music etc , have a good time and enjoy life. Sure there is more. But the last two points are paramount for me Sent from my Nexus One using Gearslutz.com

Me and Chris are cool - we are still planning on getting work done together - I did have a legit question though and did get a legit answer. So lets just put this all behind us before this thread just makes me look like a bad guy.
