Hip hop based tutorials: mixing samples

Peace. Can anyone point me in the direction of some articles or tutorials where it explains how to make your samples sit in good with the rest of your mix? I've heard just some eq & compression will help but my samples just don't seem to sit right in my mix. Please help!

I always see these type of questions, but I never have any problems mixing samples, if I decide to do so. Samples from records are already recorded and mixed to a high standard. Try turning the sample down or a simple lo or hi pass eq will do. Or notch out eq bands where your drums are sitting.

maybe this is just semantics, but i think in most cases it's more about making the rest of your track fit with your sample(s). especially if you're building the primary groove around material from one record, it makes more sense to take steps to ensure that the complimentary sounds you choose fit well with the material you've sampled. you have more control over that and you're not dealing with audio that has already been mixed and mastered.

Then you must Learn what you are doing with the EQ and Compressor, not just turn knobs.

Make a copy of the sample, that way you can do whatever you want with one and not have to worry about loss. Then tweak the shyte outta the sample. Get used to what your actions sound like. Do this repeatedly until you're able to MAKE the EQ and Compressor do what YOU want them to do to the sample.

Peace.
