if the timing of the sample I try to add is crucial:
I pitch shift it in the effects section of my akai s1100 (or external hardware effect module with a pitch shifter) until it fits..then time stretch it based on the pitch offset I came up with in the effect section...

I am running sp1200s and akai rack samplers here..so I guess with all
these ableton live real time timestretching things and melodyne plugins and programms and what not, things are much easier nowadays, but that shit does not run on my g3 mac with macos9
...Does not phase me, but I wish I could run that melodyne DNA thing on my machine..sometimes you can really dissect complex samples and create new ones..

i do it the other way around... much easier.

first work with just the sample... then... add your synths or whatever.

iow... start with the least pliable elements.

Same. I start with my sample, then find the key of it. Then I do any fine pitching to a basic piano to figure out how out of pitch it is. Then I can use that adjustment on all instruments. You can often do this globally in many programs as well, just make sure if you change the global pitch, it doesn't effect the pitch of the sample as well.

If you have to do it "backwards" (well backwards to me), I would just do it "forwards" at the end of the track. Just backwards engineer the changes. If you find you need to make a piano 30 cents sharp to mesh, then you can make the sample 30 cents flat and add it back into your previous work.

For me, it's just extremely easier to hear it that way. When pitching a sample to an existing work, it can take me exponentially more time.
