Just so I understand this correctly - what classifies a "500 series?" anything that can go in a lunchbox?

You can also get those in lunchbox module format I'm pretty sure.

What are the downsides to the 500 series versions of these units? Some people think they sound different - or it is a known fact that they really sound different? I mean I guess with the different size comes different pieces that go inside of it - so it would sound different - but I mean noticeably so.

I was also looking at the API lunch boxes. They seem well respected and loved. I was wondering tho, if I had a lunchbox with the 512c and the 550a, would I only be able to use the 550a going in while tracking? I feel stupid for asking this but I've never worked with outboard EQs, but I'm pretty sure you can use the EQ to treat your vocals during mixing stage right?

The 550a costs $1000. I have the Waves version. Is it THAAAAT much better?

It depends on the specific module.

Define noticeably... But, in some cases, YES!

Plus, not every 500 series piece of gear is great. In fact, some of them SUCK (just like everything else in life).

You want something fantastic in the 500 series... go with the MA5.

I may on occasion talk about some of the products I am a dealer for in my posts.. and that's OK! I sell them because I like them. Not vice versa. It's more fun to talk about things you know and love, then things you don't.

I like the 500 series... But, it's like the Pokemon of the audio world... Cute little things that had a HUGE following for a while and then kind of faded away once people collected all the cards (or in this case modules)..

MA5 will always be top notch regardless of the format, though. There's not another pre under $2k I would rather have.
I get your point, some potent cards in that collection. But i like the convenience!

I like the size. They look perfect for a good diversity in your vocal chain that you can bring with you.
