Construction Kits sample CD's?

I was checking out tracks that a friend of mine did and was impressed by the how professional/commercial the tracks he put out were, in terms of quality. Most of his stuff was R&B and it all sounded radio ready. He had what appeared to be a live bass, live guitar, and live drums over top of these lush synths and pads that you typically hear on commercial cutz. But, just as I was about to give him props for his playing and arrangements, he show me his secret. He pointed me to a library of sample CD's, you know like the big fish audio and zero g kind. He then proceeded to show me how he was able to take different peices of construction loops and chop them up into his own arrangement and make them his own. He was like instead of having to hire musicians and ssince he can't really play, this lets him make the same kind of tracks cats like B.Cox or other R.Leslie put out. At first I was hatin', but the skill he took in chopping up the original stuff to make his own was surprising impressive. I'm just trying to find out if some of you take elements from these kinds of CD's and use them in your productions. I used to think these were all cheesy and just plain garbarge. Maybe I've been sleeping and need to pick up a few sample CD's instead of trying to invest in an Access Virus TI2?

Some prepared dishes from the supermarket taste really great but if you want to be a real professionnal chef, you'd better learn to cook all by yourself.

If you like it and the audio what is the difference between this and sampling? You said he made them his own? I think do it. If it sounds good it's good.

I dont even know why you are asking. I use any audio i can get my hands on. I generally wouldn't look to do this..but would not dismiss anything!

Yes exactly. I do it all the time. If something sounds good I'll use it. I don't care where it comes from, just as long as I can get the sample cleared.

This cat already has a few major placements, so he's already getting professional work. I just never thought about using any of these CD's since I play my own instruments. He plays, as well but still uses the CD's but says he uses them because many times it's not about the playing, but more about finding or having access to the actual sounds. Instead of trying to search for days to try to find a synth patch he's looking for, he'll use one he likes from a loop CD already looped. Same with his percussion. I kept thinking he had this incredible librabry of world percussion instruments only to find he was using premade loops from CD's. Again, I'm not hatin' cuz dude is getting work the most efficient way he can. I was just surprised at what was on these kinds of CD's. The quality and flow is actually very good. When I first started sampling years ago, I'd spend $100+ dollars for one of these and 99% of the sounds/loops were str8 garbage. Guess things have changed and I HAVE been sleeping.

Not that i dont agree - Just that samples are samples. Loop CD or Vinyl it's the same damn thing! It's an art on its own and everyone can flip things 10000's of ways. Just check out the ironchef challenge thread. So many different results from the exact same samples!

It really does not matter! do what you want and F* anyone that cares to make an issue of it!

Hey I can play instruments too, but if I hear something that's hot I use it, especially if it's a royalty free sample! I play guitar/drums/bass/synth. That being said, I am open to anything and everything. I've even sampled songs off of GS members, and made sure to get sample clearance from them with a contract.

It's not really the same imho.

Taking a synth from "dope trap muzik synth lines vol. 78" for your trap music beat is not the same as combining different samples from an "ethnic" record from the 50's, an obscur Romanian Rock band from the 80's and let's say an experimental Eletronic record from the 60's, to create a boom bap track for example.

But I don't have problems with that, it's just that it's a shortcut, when you can take it and it works, go if you like it but it's not something that I would recommend to a beginner.

And I don't even talk about the "generic music" aspect.

I hear ya buddy. It wasn't meant as a dig at you. I love making music. I use all the tools available to me. And if that synth line on trap music 78 <---lol is what i want to use - i'll use it.

My point is i dont buy audio so it is unlikely that i would ever buy trap music volume x lol. So i understand. My point is the principle. He did say he made them his own. I still think its the same thing as taking audio from vinyl.

Don't worry, I really didn't take it as a dig at me.

In fact, it's the question of sample CDs VS a Virus that made me write my answer.

But yeah, basicaly I agree with you, grab whatever works and use it.

I don't think we need a thread about sample CD's.
