RECORDING VOCALS IN NUENDO 3.0

Im using nuendo as my daw and when recording vocals this is what I do.I have the vocalist do a lead and 1 stack and 1 ad lib and I send them to a group track and i use these vocal chain.I put a magneto>waves r-reverb>vst dynamics and thats pretty much it.Also I do rap music. If anybody got any tips for vocals in nuendo please feel free to put'em up.

Also here is a sample

I'm almost certain that anyone on here would tell you that it doesn't matter what program you're using the tips will be pretty much universal... besides plugins that don't work on PC's = RTAS.

Better to put the reverb on an auxillary. That way you can send multiple tracks to it and use less CPU. Don't hear much reverb in Rap, though...

Also, it is good to send your vocal tracks to a group with a compressor, etc. Always best to automate your vocals to even out the levels first, then compress rather than relying on the compressor to do that for you.

i use nuendo but i don't send my stacks and adlibs to the same group with the lead. i eq the adlibs differently vs the lead. same for the stack and hook...
the first thing in my vox mixing chain 99% of the time in nuendo is Waves C4

and as Mars said, put your reverb on an auxillary/FX channel.
though you don't hear to much reverb in hiphop...thats the point but its there... just not 2 sec plates and stuff. i have plenty of plugins and one of my fav reverb plugs is wizooverb when working with pc's and native systems like nuendo(which i love) but the last 4-6 songs i've done over the last week, i've gone old school with the TC reverb plus... sounds great when you use it right

Get youself some plugins and forget the steinberg ones

I have Waves Platnium bundle so thats pretty much it.I also use r-comp on my vocals also. But mainly i just go magneto>waves r- reverb>vst dynamics or r-comp.If there are any other good vocal plug-ins that help vocals in the waves bundle let me know. But I know that alot of guys use the r-comp on vocals.I also use true verb a little also. And for as eq on vocal i go with Q4 paragraphic eq.

Do you compress your tracks separately or on the group tracks?

depends on the sound i'm trying to get... sometimes i'll send all the hook vocals to a group with c4,neon and a deesser to start. sometimes i'll compress a few tracks on the hook with a plug then send it a group.. i don't have any rules other than using my ears...
i track with compression going into nuendo. usually peaking no more than 7db on the isa220. gives me a great smooth sound. i have some artist that yell for no damn reason and i have artist that are rather quite. the isa's compressor handles the vox in a manner that i like...plus i don't have a la2a over here right now
last night while adjusting the compressor on the isa while an artist was tracking vox he made it hit 10... when i played it back it came out fine.. i though it was gonna sound over compressed or pump something...the way i have it set sounds great but i try to never let it go past 7 while tracking.

atlantis, try colortone vs magneto... you might like it more.. i haven't used magneto in over a year but when i did use it i put it on my master for tone... i usually just set it to medium and left it alone
o atlantis, you get my email for my blackberry the other day about the songs?

I use colortone, then C4, then EQ, then compress with RENcomp (or ill use an L1 or Rvox, depends), THEN I iuse either magneto or Voxengo tape at the end of my chain.

you shouldn't need magneto or voxengo... you have enough processing as is.. but hey if it sounds good, it sounds good right

It would be great to hear some audio examples... or if some of you shared the plug settings used within your chains (and the reasoning for using them... what are your ears telling you... other than this doesn't sound like may fav artist/record)... Not to sound like a prick... but people are posting answers when sonically we have no idea what the problem sounds like... we dont even know what sound he is trying to achieve...

Just because you use either Socket, Cresent Wrench or a pair of Pliers to change a battery doesn't tell me what was wrong with the battery to begin with... when people take their cars to get fixed they usually describe the noise the car makes... no matter how much of an idiot they sound like...

9 times outta 10... I think the prob with vocals are how they sit in a mix... levels or panning...

Or is everyone one learning something from these threads and I'm just the kid that rides the Short Bus... which is most likely the case...

plugin settings...every song is different. even when dealing with the same artist on 2-3 songs. i'm not gonna keep everything 100% the same.

that seems to be directed toward me a little bit(the ear comment) so i can say i do know what issues atlantis is having b/c he did send me 2 songs to hear and i already talked to him about that.

i wouldn't say 9 of 10.. maybe 5-6... then:
how it was recorded
converter quality
to much processing
not knowing how to mix(using presets for everything thinking its gonna sound good)
i could go on but i'm on my blackberry and i hate these writing a lot with this thing.
