I would suggest an SSL 4000 series if you could find one for that price....

Surely he means the plug-ins!

However, last year I was trying to sell a used 4000 series console in a brief stint at a studio... people were lowballing us on a 40 channel console at around $40,000 USD (I'm not certain whether that would translate on a strip by strip basis, considering the effort in racking them).

The owner had purchased it earlier that year for around $80,000 CDN.

Ouch.

I left before they managed to sell it.

That's a horrible idea... It would probably cost more to rack those modules then it would to buy them... They typically sell for around $1800-2000/each... but they won't do you any good, because nobody will rack them for you (it's pricey and too time consuming for most techs to be worth it). Plus, there is probably only a half dozen techs in the US who are competent enough to do the job. It's not like a Neve 1073, which is fairly simple to rack. It is a serious job... At that point, you're better off buying one of the XLogic channel strips for $3000 if you want the SSL sound.

Although, maybe for $1500 you would be better off buying an API 512 in a lunchbox, and the Waves SSL Native bundle.. I can't honestly recommend any hardware channel strip under $2000..

like I said you gotta go to the right guy....I guess I take my situation for granted sometimes....I apologize....I'm learning too....I happen to be friends with a tech guy so I tend to forget how hard it actually is in that realm

It's all good... No argument at all.

But, in this case there isn't really any "right guy" to know. There's only a handful of guys who would be able to properly sort out all of the logic, power, etc on one of those strips (I can literally count them on my two hands). It simply would not be worth it in time and effort for any tech. And the average bench tech would never be able to get the module fully powered up without a lot of headache.... I can elaborate more via PM, but I know many people who have attempted this and many times it ends with the person selling the module and buying something else. I just don't want you or anyone to waste time or money attempting this. It's kind of like trying to put a Ferrari engine in a Honda Civic, can it be done... yes. But, is it worth it.... no way.

Why not an AMEK CIB? I have one and I really like the EQ on it and the comp is ok. I can't comment about the preamp, I use it mainly for line use.
