Distressor Settings for Rap Vocals

Just curious what settings everyone is using on rap vox when tracking with distressors.

So far I really like the opto mode (10:1) with the attack at 10 and the release at 0,
detector on HP, audio on HP and dist 2, with about 10db of gain reduction.

Call me conservative, but that sounds more like a mix setting for me...

I usually track with 3:1 and maximum 4 LEDs reduction, detector HP, no dist-mode. This leaves me with more options for later treatment.

In mix-mode it is nuke, dist2 into the red on a mult - you never lose the lead that way.

Cheers, Niko

How do you fix a terrible snare sound?
The answer is, a hit single. (Thanks, Trina)

3:1, dist2/hp, attack/release 5 , and input until I get about 5 to 6 db of gain reduction.

Oh, that is squeezing it!

I want to try that, though!

Next time I have my hands on one I will do so.

That depends on the level of the signal going into it. I try to gain stage pretty accurately. The input is also like your threshold. I wouldn't look at the gain reduction initially. Tweak until it sounds right.

Never used a Disstressor before - is this an accurate description?

Quote:
DISTRESSOR Product Description
The Distressor is an automatic gain (or volume) control device (AGC in engineering terms) designed for pro audio (music) applications. Basically, it electronically controls the volume of just about any source in a very pleasing, and "musical" manner - adding fullness, intelligibility, and especially in the Distressor's case - excitement. This type of device is often called a "limiter" or "compressor" by audio industry people. Its most probable uses will be in recording studios, live sound situations, movie sound production, and radio broadcast production.
What makes it not a limiter/compressor?

Read the rest of the page on the site. It's a digitally controlled analog compressor. At least mines are.
