what I ussualy do, is put the mic between the mouth and nose, but If the guy has a pircing voice I put higher and angle it down.

And if the guy is a screamer and like to sing close "to capture like he is eating the mic" (singer quote) I get more space between the Pop stopper and the mic, because I don't like the mic sound when you are yelling at it close to the mic.

But every singer has a different sweet spot

very hard to say without hearing the source and what's wrong with it...

sometimes I just let them run around with a 58 and work it themself.

That really varies with each and every application ,
Headphones on and moving the Mic around helps to define the Spot ,
Or rather shall I say "the Sound " your looking for,
...as any spot can work If your looking for that certain tone !

i like some space between the mouth and the capsule. I usually put a pop filter 5 inches from the capsule that way the singer cannot eat the mic. I find it makes the vocal sound much more open. I am not a fan of that on top of the mic sound plus nobody knows how to perform on a mic these days anyway so you end up with them talking soft and then screaming without increasing the distance from the mic. Hello distortion. A little distance also allows the artist to move around a little without going in and out of the sweet spot.
