old Korg TR rack?

Old Korg TR racks seem to be mad cheap - any good?

if not which one of the older Motif racks is good bang for buck?

I'm looking for something that will give some good bread and butter commercial sounds but hopefully isn't too played out or PITA to program your own presets.

Working with old E-MU P2000 ROMs at the mo via a Vintage Pro, like it v much.

Also, not looking for something where you have to spend hours in a software editer to get round limited interface on rack unit.

If you don't want a software solution it's fairly nice.

Unfortunately it can be quite dated at times and the sounds have been around the block and back again in the way of "notable usages".

*In my opinion* if you don't have a specific workflow preference when it comes to HW/SW, it is bested by even bundled "freeware" software offerings in 2011.

However, again, if your desired workflow is HW based, if you can find one under $250 USD you may enjoy it.

I would do my best to find a "+" version which includes the Prophecy synthesis engine which will subsequently expand the eventual "capped out" sonic pallet inherent to ROMplers with limited editing capabilities.

Great Sound but questionable interface design. The tiny push buttons on that rack can be annoying and also can get stuck, other than that...go for it.

thanks very much guys!

I'd really like to stick with HW rack stuff, for now at any rate - I just use a computer way way too much at work - I know a screen is a screen but still.

I always find that its good to scope these things out so I can take my time looking out for one at the right price - at first glance they seems to be available on the cheap.

would one of the older motifs maybe be a better choice - or is the Korg more of a hip hop module?

again, many thanks!

heard this, is using midi controller for filters and envelope etc the answer? the interface does sound bit so so. I do like to change presets, at the very least remove certain filters (like delay/reverb) so can use my own that suit track more.

Even just changing pages, presets and other midi settings can be a pain with those buttons after a while. Have to be careful with a used one because the previous owner could have already worn down those buttons considerably, try it out in person first if possible.

It's the best Korg rompler.

I have a Trinity Extreme and I am planning to buy a TR Rack because it has better filters.

Even though I already have a Trinity Extreme I now also bought a TR Rack. Although they share the Korg sound, the filters are better.

samples have great playability. I also like the bigger screen compared to say, a motif. It has really nice motion synths, pads, etc.

"Old"? Damm... It's not that old is it? I can still remember buying mine (when it came out) like it was yesterday.

this was the first hardware module i ever purchased, for the exact reason that they are so cheap. I just use it for the presets which are very good. The organs, pads, and drums are great.

Check out this track. The organs are played right out of a preset from the TR rack:

i love when people say triton sounds are dated and been used around the block. Like all these VST's just came out hours ago. Not to mention who can pin point a sound thats layered in composition with out sounds and say where it came from.

I've had one racked up for years. Don't use it anywhere near as much as I used to, but if something happened to it I'd grab another one. It's that way for me with a lot of old things though - when I'm working on something that needs a specific vibe, nothing beats knowing exactly which box will have it.
