Thread Starter | Mic Pre/Mic combo for R&B Female Vocals With all this talk about Mic Pres and Mics for Hip Hop. I wanted to get you guys feedback on Mic Pre's and Microphones for recording R&B Vocals, in particular, Female Vocals. The kind of sound I try to get out of my setup is in the stylings of Amerie, Mary J.Blige, Destiny's Child etc. Here's my vocal chain to start off this discussion thread: Rode NTK --> Avalon 2022 -->DBX160XT --> HD192 What's your weapon (s) of choice for the ultimate Female R&B vocal chain? |

| TLM 103 or U87 > Prism MMA-4 or a Summit Audio > LA-2A or 1176 (or combo) > Mac (RME Fireface) with UAD Pultec and UAD DreamVerb or Logic Spacedesigner. Nice for upfront clean RnB vocals. |

| My altimate Vox chain combo. Studio Projects T3 valve mic to Avalon 737 with a hint of 20k to Purple Audio MC77 with 5 to 7 db of compression.. I can put up a U47 to 1081 to LA2A and it does not shine and sit up as good as the above.. |

| Lives for gear | Aretha Franklin into an SM57 to an Mbox will make all of our shit sound like trash lol. However, if you can't find Aretha Franklin. I'd try a U67(ish) or M49(ish) mic into an Avedis MA5 with an Opto compressor of some sort. Modded MK319 on female vocals sound dope with an MA5>Buzz Opto Comp. I got some really good results with female vocals going Mutt>DMP3>dbx 163x>ART PRO VLA. A good blend of vanilla and chocolate. Swirly e. Switching the preamp choice would change the overall flavor of the vocal. Disclosure: I sell mics. ![]() Peace Illumination
