When yall buy "drum kits" are you buying pre-made drum kits that you just import and load into your DAW (like pre-made ESX24 kits or Redrum kits), or are you buying collections of samples and creating your own custom drum kits using those samples?

I added some organic snare drum samples and a collection of short fx, clicks and glitches to the popular minipack series: all these packs are donationware (1 euro or more) so for a few bucks you can get plenty of original samples and create some innovative drum kits. ![]() glitch pack | loops de la crème ![]() snare pack | loops de la crème

Illmind's kit is good if your adding layers, M-Phazes is good if you just want something quick & don't want to layer... both kits will really just make you sound like their protege' though.. (unless you stack well)... I'm more into the making your own drums thing, but I do use Deadly Drums in the process of creating them often... (you don't really need to stack too much on those)... With those three, some breaks, and a good ear, your good!!! (all these kits are processed drum break samples, so you can make them yourself) |

My Tastes have evolved lately...so it really depends on what I'm doing. I find that SS Urban Electro paired with Prime loops fits any Dub Step/House/Pop bill, especially in conjunction with nexus style synths. Hit Kit though it's my opinion that the sounds are a bit "dated" for "hip hop" and where it's headed now (rap), i find that its has plenty of sounds that many other kits miss the bill on, that help fill out productions and experimentation with creating sounds. Especially at such a good quality. I've been searching High and Low for a decent "Timbo/Danja" style pop/dance kits similar to "Future Sex Love Sounds" and THA LOOPs (former cats from Modern Beats) nailed it. I bought every single shot kit on that site...very inspirational when i feel like some "bounce". If you need some REAL DRUMS in your productions, where it be like hip hop or pop, Mike Chav kicked serious butt putting together Urban Arsenal... its not as many sounds as you would like in a kit, but it covers the basics, and it fits in very well with whatever I'm doing. And I love adding FX to them, because it's generally all i need to do to find a texture i like. And if you do dirty south beats, or 808 style tracks... Get his 808 library, its just kicks and booms...but its very creative and useful...helps creating a distinct flavor to a saturated trend!!! Besides that Boss Loops make the best south construction kits, just chop up or isolate the single shots, and you're in business. For Breaks...Producer's Choice "Tape Breaks" belongs in every ITB home..it just adds character, and gives you the meat and potatoes of anything hip hop...in my opinion. Those are quality kits...that people took time to process ^^ Outside of that Producers Choice put ALL of Johnny Julianos kits in one bundle...so if you on that vibe..its a good look Boi 1da made a big mistake by letting his personal collection out for a moment, but some of those links are still active...and I use those like i use EQ....very good, especially if you deal with rappers looking for a "right now" sound. You can't do too much extra processing to them...but you can layer your own from his individual hits...or keep them hitting like they are. Since i use FL studio most of the time, that works for what i do. Lex Luger had a kit on soundclick, if you can find that....you have the grape jelly of anything he's doing (and everyone else). I can keep going... |

AH yes! the continual search for the ultimate drums! What you need to ask yourself is this: 1) What am i looking for in my drums? Do i want a vinyl classic hip hop boom bap style? Or electronic banging 808's? perhaps i want an overt synth sound like white noise? What kind of drum indeed?! 2) Now i know what type of drums i want - do i want them processed? Am i the kind of guy that likes to get in and comp/distort my drums to perfection!? Do i want layered drums that knock straight away? 3) Do i want to be like everyone else? It's no biggie - I'm super talented and can use sounds everyone knows but still rock it my way? I want to be original.. Ok so the whole third person joke about was meant in good fun but seriously - understanding what you want will give you an answer...so here it is! If you want the classic sound..Sample from vinyl it's great! You could also make your own classic breaks and treat them with a nice drum vst like addictive or BFD. But the dirt is in the sample in my opinion! If you want nice sounding processed stuff - well the sonic specialists and acoustic blends kits from sounds in HD sound good - If you want a nice synth sounding - make it on a synth!! Or you could just cop a nice goldbaby 808/909. To be honest loads available..you could bite one from a CD..who said that!? not me.. Or you could go the whole hog (MY FAV) design drums for your sound your purpose. You could sample some single hits or record some drums..have em just how you like em.. This is a never ending quest. Find out what you want the go get! God bless

| Multi-sampled drums? I can't tell... sounds like he just picked some one shots and set velocity. The kick sounds like it's at the ceiling on every hit.. But damn... these drums go HARD... I don't think anybody does drums better right now. Black Milk crushin em all.. |

So you just move it up or down to a tone you like it at? Or are there more specific instincts?

One point - MG, I have to say that i like a lot of your posts. Even when i dont agree i generally think you do a good job of communicating your point of view. BUT DUDE! Boi1Da kit i heard was mastered in the most ERRR disgusting way. Basically i want it really loud so i'm just gonna go nuts with a limiter in FL and SMASH transients to muck - They CLIP so badly i want to vomit! NOT FOR ME THANKS! Then again i did hear a little beat Lago made with them and it did sound good in the context of the mix - I can defo see why some people will use them - But for me transients are drums..end of..you loose them you loose all ability to shape your drum sound..I dont want to hear a KNOCK BOOM i want to feel it. Just my 2 cents and 3 pennies. FYI - I have those Boi 1 da drums on one of my zillions of glyphs..If anyone wants i can upload tonight. God bless Last edited by KT1; 1st November 2011 at 10:04 AM.. I skip alot of his stacks cuz they are indeed over processed...he uses Soundgoodizer to mold his sounds together...and i hate the way it sounds when i use it...so more power to him. But the sounds and textures he has "fit" into what the type of people i make music for. It's easy to make a Drake'ish beat with Drake's producer's drums. It's easy to do a wayne/birdman beat with that guy's drums. In my recent reel, the first 2, i used his drums for my own sound..and it works. However, alot of his sounds don't. But for cats who can't find good drums, don't create drums, or simply haven't collected them as long as we have...i think its a good kit to have up your sleeve to get started immediately.

In the past what worked for me is that, download as many kits you come across and start making your own kits to taste, so you have some thing to fall back to. Edit the samples, layer them, EQ them, Etc.

Then watch the drummer before you rehearse or gig and see what goes on in the tuning department. You will see a light bulb go off! )

A couple of peeps on here have had a listen...smoking ..story etc. They are acoustic set programmed with a live drum feel. Style is a mixture.. But holding out but being patient. I have just completed a remix which I should be able to show you soon..its not my usual style but the drums are there ..so not long. | Chris Lago, ![]() Here is your mission, Chris please expose all of the ( undercover infiltrators.) You can't pull one over on him so beware ![]() Job well done Chris..Lol. Good sugestions on this thread, It's a drum gumbo out there, pick, chose, mix, layer, tune then use your set that fits the track. Save it to create your own pack, you'll be surprised at how many you will accumulate over the years. ( process and resample what you have, you may not need another unless it's something very unique to add to your arsenal.) & blessings.
