giving Gun Shots punch

Im always having people want gun shots in there songs and when i usually put some in songs for people they don't have as much punch as hear in commercial songs, i was just wondering if there is a certain plugin i would need or compression setting?? Im working w pro tools and loads of plugins and im just wondering how could i make this happen...........

Try sweeping through the spectrum with an EQ to see where the sweet spot of the sample is. You can get a little boost out of that. Gating sometimes helps, too.
Otherwise, look for a better sample.

the problem with gunshot samples is that when you hear a real shot (in real life) it will simply totally distort in your ears, because it´s´way too heavy for the human ears...
but samples mostly are well recorded, means the mics are not overdrived...it´s a psychological thing that these samples always sound weak compared to what you have in your imagination...

i would try to heavenly distort these samples and then compress it to get it thick and tight....that should provide an impact you´d expect from an gunshot....

i already know that i definetely have good samples, im basically comparing them to the effects i've heard in some commercial recordings where the shots really come out and jump at you....

Usually, the gun shots on sound effects libraries and such have way too much reverb on 'em. I'd love to have some gunshots around with no reverb at all.

Maybe try subtley mixing a snare sound under neath ...I'm almost sure this is what Dre does in some of his tracks...you just need to pick the right snare.

With sounds such as gunshots and certain types of hits, placement in the mix is key.

You don't want it to clip the meters or be to weak as to be non effective.
As someone said earlier ,distortion helps a lot used with compression.

I use my distressor for this. You can add a touch of distortion and place it perfectly
in the mix with much crunch. Sometimes a little EQ is needed depending on the sample.

I agree with Con, GET A BETTER SAMPLE.

Use the General series or something from Lucas

HONESTLY for me it's the other way around listening to good libraries and the dimension they get and wondering why my own samples (categorized by caliber and recorded on the 4th of July when nobody wonders why you are shooting a gun into the dirt and recording it with a portable DAT machine)

I often place the samples beneath snares to make snrs bigger, so it's funny to hear someone placing snrs beneath shots to make em bigger

I simulated a gunshot once by smacking the shite out of an air conditioner with a 2x4 run through a lexicon

in 1989

I'd tell them don't do it, it's played out and completely been done to death

then again I record tool wannabes all day

There are many different acceptable gunshots. And like a lot of sound effects, synthesis of the wanted sound may come off better than an actual recording/sample. It may be better using a drum.

I love the big bang on Aerosmith's 'Janie's Got A Gun'. And they pull it off live as well. Sounds huge! But it sure ain't a real gunshot.
+1 most entertainment gunfire audio is an exaggeration of the real thing. Even when you are in hearing damage range of the real thing it's a bit too sharp and thin sounding for what we want to hear on album, TV, or movies. Even .308 battle rifle cartridges sound like super loud snaps. Synthesize it, layer it, etc. Fer instance it was known that the old Miami Vice show used gunshots mixed with varisped gator growls for their cheese. Have fun.

To capture the best shotgun sound you need to use an old mussel loader. A black powder, 56 cal with about a 36" barrel. These things give you that 'roar' sound that are captured much better by microphones (about 20-50ft away and in front of). Also be sure to pick the location well since all places resonate differently. In the woods with very leafy trees helps capture a very clean sound.

"who me, occifer... me shooting in these here woods... nawww... ...I heard some shots off yonder earlier!!!"

fuuck

One day years ago, the Beatnuts were in a studio in NYC, they wanted a gunshot sound on the song so they tell the engineer to start recording... take out a gun and start shooting in the live room.... My buddy the engineer nearly sh!t himself...
