What are your compression settings for main vox?

I was jus t interested in finding out what are some of your compression settings during recording and during your mixdown. I'm working on a song and I want the main vox to be upfront and personal, not blended yet buried in the mix. This particular song will have little background ads...only chorused highlights.

What are some good settings for this approach? (I'm using a Distressor)

use a waves C4 first with the vocal setting that is focused in the upper mids and 5kish..then an EQ, then If you want upfront vocals use the Rvox and use that compressor..it will put them up in your face.

No disrespect intended Meth, as Im sure youve had good success with what you describe, but as generic advice in answer to the question I dont think its that appropriate. particularly when we dont know the sound of the voice.
Plus your advice focuses on Waves plugins when Big is using a distressor

@ Big

When I track I generally go at anywhere between 2:1 and 4:1, fairly fast attack and release (usually with an 1176 - just to give you an idea of the sort of attack and release times im talking about - so with your distressor you'll be looking at similar settings).

At mix, anything from 2:1 to 8:1 depending on the rapper, how much Ive compressed on the way in.

Remember that compression effects are multiplied, not added, so tracking at 3:1 then mixing at 4:1 is like having a 12:1 ratio in a single pass.

Outside of compression, for upfront and personal, stay away from verbs, and maybe just use a very subtle tight delay ?

yeah..didnt see he had the distressor.

Sometimes OPTO works...it's printed right there on the distressor...10:1,Slow attack, fast release...
you really got to play with the compressor 'till it's doing what sounds right for the situation...
try the 2nd and 3rd dist to bring out some bite...
also maybe hi pass the audio...

I use a 4:1 when tracking and as much as 8:1 when mixing, fast attack and medium release, also if you have waves plug ins,use the limiter, it really makes it easy to make the vocals sit in the mix or in front of it. Peace
