Sound Quality Help

Hey all.

I just rented my new audio setup and am having a little bit of trouble.

I rented the following:

Mic: Shure SM7B
Pre: Great River ME-1NV
Interface: Motu Audio Express USB

I am for some reason getting a really bad sound, maybe I didnt hook it up properly? It sounds bland, and not crisp at all.

I ran an XLR cable from the mic, to the Mic In on the Great river, then I ran an XLR from the Output on the Great river, to a TLR on the Line in on the Motu. Sorry if this is confusing, my knowledge and terminology is limited.

Please help me out, I want to get to recording.

BTW for just today im sampling it in Audacity but will be getting reaper, dont know if this plays a role.

I suggest going to a recording studio in your area and return all the rental equipment you rented. Its a waste of money if you dont know how to use it.
Your issue can be 100 different things, from your room, to mic placment, to gain staging

Im not at the point where I want to go to a studio I want to mess around, but with something that sounds good.

When I record, I hear disturbance in the background for some reason. i recorded here before with a SM7b, RFN and Mbox and it sounded fine. So there must be something messing it up.

You can get pro sounding recordings with a $100 preamp and a $79 microphone, so equipment is not your problem. The use of it is.

If your hearing something in your recording, you need to find the source of it. No one here can tell you. We can guess. Maybe its street noise or your A/C unit or maybe its your PC noise. Maybe a bad cable or mic. It can be anything and everything. Even Jewelry that you are wearing.

Start troubleshooting it by taking one thing out of the equation and/or replacing it with another. Read up on recording techniques also. Especially vocal recording techniques. This will help you understand things a bit better..

May I venture a guess..

Do you have phantom power engaged? On the pre? On your interface? Better without the pre? Better with a different mic? All cords secure?

Sounds frustrating! Good luck!
