I like the Waves SSL line too. Don't think there's a mix where I don't use the Channel Strip. But don't sleep on the Waves API stuff, both the 550's and the 560 are killer.

Been using the SSL plugs for quite some time now. They are great and serve a purpose. However I can't use them on everything. I go to them for that sound.

I love the API stuff too. They are very tight and thick sounding to me.

The SSL sounds a little thinner.

The SSL comp sounds good as a drum buss but I have other stuff I like better depending on the song.

Don't sleep on the Rcompressor or RVox or even the Ren Eq's

They are FANTASTIC and as plug ins go are every bit as good as the SSL stuff.

Just a different flavor! Each has their own mojo right for their specific occasion!

Waves E Channel is my go-to plug for a lot of stuff. I'd choose the Rcompressor over the SSL channel comp on certain things like vox, but the SSL does get use. The SSL buss compressor gets a lot of use on my master with a little bit of reduction and also on my drum buss.

I personally love the API stuff too. the 2500 and 550s get a lot of use.

Both are great on certain things, neither sound as good as the real hardware. lol

Waves ssl eq an buss comp

API 2500 (waves) is the best, most full featured comp I've used on the 2buss.

The main drawback: It has a TON of sweet spots! You can spend a lot of time in "tweek mode" if you don't go in with a plan to acheive a distinct outcome... I love THOSE types of drawbacks!

Not sure what DAW you are using, but with Cubase I use the sidechain feed on the Waves SSL, then I high pass filter the sidechain to control the kick pumping. You can't do this with the UAD - not sure about the Duende plugs. The Waves API 2500 is also a great compressor plug and the other one that gets loads of use is the Waves CLA 1176. You can get awesome results smashing things with it and ducking it with a kick sidechain.

.....yeah agree with previous 2 posters, I have hardware 1073's and the waves veq's are really close, they are my go to for vocals. I use the ssl bus comp all the time on the mix bus, don't have the hardware so can't comment on how close they are, however plenty of top pros for whom it is their go to bus comp, I use e or g channel on every mix also, even if I don't compress willuse the filters and eq section......these are great tools, which should make mixing a little easier

Not knockin' Waves but "the Glue" has a bypass filter built right in so you don't have to sidechain anything.

I've tried the bus comp, but clearly prefer The Glue. I just find it more clear and punchy and it has more options either. Nothing against Waves - great plugs especially the VEQ.

Can I ask what a channel strip is? I'm very new to mixing so excuse the noobish question. I understand what compressors do (even out peaks and dips of volume in the track, right?). But what is a buss comp? What is a channel strip? What's the difference between the RenComp and the RenVox? Aren't they both compressors?

a Channel strip has more than one thing on it, in easy terms..it will have an EQ and a compressor all in one! there are a lot of different combinations of channel strips but this should give you an idea!
