| Lives for gear | This snare sound! Help!
I have been searching for a snare sound like this for AGES. Where in the world do you get a sound like that?! Problem is, I don't even know what to search for in terms of 'how to describe it'? Anyone have a sample, or know what machines were used to create it? The kick sounds like a standard Linn or some other common 80's drum machine, but damn I can't get a snare sound that is even close to this! Snare doesn't come in until about 1:00 |

to me that sounds like a soft rim shot with some synth perc layered. The synth layer sounds like some sort of bell/tabla/high conga and the "breath" is probably white noise, it sounds filtered too with a good amount of resonance.

Sounds like a heavily processed wood block.. plate verb maybe. I think a quick fire way would be to get the sound of a submarine underwater sonar blip (you hear them in every sub movie) and blend with a wood block then verb it out. Cheers |

Okay I'll be the the first: If you can find that snare by its self in the song...sample it! Different takes on whether or not that's appropriate... Not trying to have that discussion. There are many many cases of drum "theft" among very capable successful artists... Dave Pensado and Kanye West come to mind. Add your name to the list if you want. But likely that is the only way to get an exact match... If you want something similar: Try out Urban Electro by Sonic Specialists. If it's not there, I'm under the impression that Sirocco would be willing to work with you on acheiving it. Im not 100% sure but I seem to remember him working with some ****** poster a while back... And imagine how helpful he might be to someone more appreciative! |

That was the first thing I listened for too but only found a couple that would still need processing... only gave it one take though. The cool thing about learning how to create your own is that you can build your skill and end up with sounds that are.. well.. your own. |

At Dayl: I totally agree. Give a man a fish vs teach a man to fish yeah? But if that dude wants an Alaskan Salmon specifically... I'll tell him how to get to the right store and buy it. It's just good to have options! Making your own is super super dope!!! Sonic Specialists is a darn fine operation too. If the op does want to make his own drums (not just this one sound but in general) I would actually recommend Urban Fire 4! (5 and 6 probably too) And why? The guys making it love making drums, and actually included some great tools for others to do the same! Kick enhancers, support tails, etc... Some are included in the demo and I would be happy to discuss some good applications for them if anyone is interested... I just don't want to hijack the op's thread. |

1) Woodblock sample. 2) Noise with lots of resonance. Any subtractive synth with a noise oscillator and a decent filter would do. 3) Blend and apply lots of reverb. |

| well it probably is... I might be wrong for the soft rim layer, maybe it's just a sythetized perc...wood block seems a good sugestion, the verb was obvious so did not mention it...I see someone else is hearing filtered white noise with resonance... def sound like they used some.

I'm definitely going to play with all of these suggestions today. It would be my first foray into sculpting white noise into a percussion sound (wish me luck ). Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a hit of this in the track that is alone enough to sample! I would have no qualms with sampling it. In fact, I find it kinda cool and conversation worthy to do this! I'm working on a track that really needs a sound like this. I couldn't say for sure whether this EXACT sound would be perfect or not, but I can't even find a sound similar to this one anywhere. I just might contact Sirocco for help building one. Anyone else do sound design around here? And I shit you not, I'm gonna try and contact Ryuichi Sakamoto (the composer of this track) too! |

Hey man..for this..it's all about finding the right combination of source sound and reverb (very important) It does indeed sound like a woodblock with some reverb on it..nothing more. It just has to be pitched in the correct manner and you should get very similiar results. Have you tried this?

I'm stuck at a serious road block on this track, cuz I just can't find the right snare sound! Granted, when I really look at my talents, they are more in writing/composition than in production in particular, so it's always a bit frustrating for me... | |

1'30'' in battery http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2199844/snr.wav , not the right pitch but it's kinda close IMO, it's a rim+a clave+filtered white noise

Heavily reverbed woodblock with a lower pitched synthetic style rim shot underneath...

I was just looking in the abbey roads 80's kit for sticks for that other thread, and found the woodblocks to sound pretty close to your example. I can tweak the parameters, like shorten the decay on the reverb, change pitch etc if you want. |

Classic Track. I reckon he just put a big reverb on a Roland D-50 percussion sound. Woodblock or Clav or something like that. Hope you're well bro!

Well it doesn't get any better than this. I emailed Ryuichi Sakamoto yesterday via his fan mail address on his webpage, and got a reply from his site guy today! Here it was: "Dear Greg, Thank you for your email and interest in Mr. Sakamoto's music. I forwarded Ryuichi your email, he wanted me to let you know: it was the Linn Drum rimshot and prophet5 noise with a reverb. ![]() All the best, ~Alec" How cool is that?! Mr. Sakamoto going out of his way to answer back within a day! I was playing with a short white noise sample myself, with a bandpass filter at about 990.3hz, with the resonance WAY up and it sounds really close. Thank you all for the help though! Some of the other suggestions are still useful in learning, and the samples posted have all been added to the library! |
