TLM-103 vs U87

In the "Must Have Mics for Rap" thread I see that the U87 is VERY popular. My main mic is the TLM-103. I am just wondering if it would be a worthwhile upgrade to get the U87. Even if I get good money for my TLM103, the upgrade will cost well over $1000. Has anyone compared the two mics and feel that the upgrade can be justified? I feel I have been getting good results with the 103 (see the mp3 section for some of my recent mixes), but I am always looking to improve.

Should I "trade-up" to a 87 or use the cash for something like a Distressor?

if i were you, i'd use the G for something different or to get something you feel you are lacking.
i have a 103 and an 87... i paid full pop for the 103 and the only reason i have the 87 was because i got it for less than a beta 58 cost

Interesting. I really want to get something to improve my sound and figured the mic would be something where clients would really hear the difference. Maybe I should save up for a really good mic.

Any other opinions?

get the distressor. matter of fact, get 2. 1 for your kick, and one for your snare of your vocals. id much rather have a decent mic and a distressor and a dope pre, then a dope mic, and nothing else.

Hmm, maybe I should get the Distressor. Right now I have a 737, but I mainly use software compression.

I'm surprised no one is dissing the TLM103 and telling me to get a "real Neumann".

tlm103 vs. u-87

I have both an 87 and a 103, and there IS a big diffrence between both of them. Your'e upgrade won't be a grand. It will be around 700 bucks. I have 2 u-87's and I paid 1200 for one and 1300 for the other. E-Bay my brother, E-Bay! If you have a decent mic pre you shouldn't have a problem. I am a huge fan of the 87. It works on everything! I sometimes run it through a Vipre and it sounds FANTASTIC!

I second the option of taking that grand and get another mic, I'm a big fan of U87, but I always felt that there is no "prefect on everything mic", every singer has a different voice, different sound..and U87 will be good must of the time, but it migth not be perfect... my 2 cents..

I figure a rapper will be able to hear the difference a 87 makes versus the difference a Distressor makes.

Yeah, I get all my stuff on eBay, but a getting used 87 is a little scary. Any advice so as not to get burned? (I am VERY eBay savy, just looking for advice particular to buying a used 87.)

I've used both mics for doing lead vocals through a Millennia...., i would rather save up for the distressor. More bang for buck imo. I agree with Tommy's comments.
