| sampling..which way to really go?? ok, I been thinking..I need to get a sampler. I run Logic 7 pro with a dual 2.0 G5. Now..I been thinking to get a software or hardware sampler. I never really messed with software samplers so I really don't know what some of the good ones are out there....+ how they sound.

| Be a little more specific. Do you need a "sampler", or a "rompler" (which is a sample player)? For romplers, as Tony has already mentioned, kontakt2 is brilliant (especially if you're a tweaker and script writer). Steinberg's Halion3 is equally wonderful if you just need a rompler with tweaking functions. One VERY powerful option (PC platform), is GigaStudio 3. Enormous library and extremely quality. It has the lowest latency of any sampler but your computer needs to be tweaked to standards, as it operates at the kernel level. Best of all, you can sample or 'record sound' with it. Gigastudio is used by composers such as Hans Zimmer and the like. To be honest, it may be a bit much for you, if your needs are simple. But it is indeed a monster! http://www.tascamgiga.com/ Fruityloops' Direct Wave is another that DOES "sample" and be can used to do "automatic sampling of VSTi plugins". Though it isn't yet available as a separate VST plugin, it CAN be routed through Rewire. http://www.flstudio.com/English/frames.html One more, is Skylife's SampleRobot. It covers your traditional sampling needs AND can be used to 'record' your hardware synths (with velocity switching and all). You basically do nothing. It does the "automatic sampling of VSTi plugins" as well, obviously. This function comes in handy if you use softsynths that are resource hogs. Instead of bouncing, you can have that patch at your disposal (whatever Multi-sample format you require) whenever you need it. http://www.samplerobot.com/was_b.htm Ok, that was the long answer. Short answer.......I echo Tony's recommendations: if you don't fancy EXS24, kontakt 2 or Halion3. |

| even though its hugely popular for drums, Battery 2 is an awesome sampler. Especially if you come from the MPC. Between that and kontakt 2, you would be set honestly. |

| battery does not have a sequencer..i am not sure if you can play rex files thru it either. kontakt can play any files..but both programs need a host for sequencing. Cubase plus battery and kontakt is a really nice beat making setup. |

| You might wanna checkout the new EMU Emulator X2. Looks like it's a beast for chop'n up samples/loops (Twistaloop) and it's going to include a automated sampling app (synthswipe). Namm video: http://www.onebluemonkey.com/WinterN...61.asp?id=444# EMU http://www.emu.com

I do not like the exs24. Setting up kits and instruments is a pain in the ass on the exs24. I could definetly be doing it wrong or the long way, but i don't so. Kontakt is way better. As far as the hardware vs software thing, the software stuff that is sample based stuff sounds so much better the hardware. Nothing hardware based beats trilogy. I just picked up atmosphere and am loving it. If you do anything with film it is perfect. Collosus is sick and can easily replace a motif. Anybody want to buy mine? | |
