2 track Mixing Question!!!!

I'm in the final steps of recording a mixtape and I'm now faced with the task of mixing it
What i need to know is how you guys producers/mixing engineers go about mixing a 2-track(instrumental and vocals)
As we all know mixtapes are an extremely important in promotion and can also be profitable
that being said my tape has to sound great
It is possible (Young Jeezy - "Can't Ban Da Snowman", Juelz Santana - "Fiend Out", Lil Wayne - "the suffix")
All of the tapes i mentioned had numerous instrumentaltracks from other artists but still managed to maintain a similar vocal sound from track to track
how do i do this??
what are some techniques you guys use when mixing a two track??
how do i get the instrumental out of the way of the vocal without out doing to much to it?<<the beats still gotta knock
your help will be kindly appreciated
im sure there are many others like myself who wanna know how to do this correctly its such a common thing these days

thanks

My vocal chain>>>neumann tlm 103>>avalon 737sp>>apogee rosetta>>2 protools via spdif

i also have the waves diamond bundle
bombfactory compressors
focusrite red plugins
to work with

p.s. I would love 2 have a professional mixing engineer mix it but is that necessary
i dont think so but i may be wrong and weighing in the cost of doing so i think i may go ahead and mix it myself anyway

PLEASE IF YOU CAN HELP ME I WILL GLADLY APPRECIATE IT!!!

ALSO IF ANYONE HAS LINKS TO SOME TUTORIALS OR PREVIOUS THREADS FROM THIS FORUM OR OTHERS POST A LINK

THANKS AGAIN 2 ALL

one thing i'll say, is mix your vocals around the inst... since you have no control over it. also, if you're compressing the mix, send the instrumental out another bus and adjust to best mtch the record you're using.

what are some things i can do 2 make the instrumental and vocals coexist??

THANKS

One thing is make sure they have the same fidelity. If the track is ey and the vocals clean, dirty up the vocals a lil bit.

Also you can always EQ the music to have a pocket for the vocals (smiley face EQ), but don't lose the snare in the process.

One other quick fix is to sidechain a compressor on the music with the vocal. Thats like when the dj is talking over the music on the radio, just do a less extreme version with a higher threshold and lower ratio.

Finally 2 buss EQ/Compression are your best friend. Since you aren't really mixing you are basically mastering what elements you are given. I'd suggest get as close as you can without a lot of limiting at the final stage then take it to get it professionally mastered.

Good luck!!!

These are the type of answers i was looking for

I would take it a step further.

For mixtape CD's that i get to mix these days with the vocals added on after, its common to automate and EQ the the music for different sections.

Like EQ and automate the music differently in the verses as opposed to the choruses.

The right fader rides can help the music not be overpowered by the vocal and vice versa and it creates a flow to the whole mix.
