I recently bought an mpc 2000xl and its great. very flexible and easy but....the sound quality itsz just so crisp for the type of hip hop beats im tryin to make . ive heard of the 12-bit Akai S950 sampler that alot of producers used to use back in the day with their sp1200 and whatnot. would this get me that grimey thick sound. im not exactly the best engineer and i just need a quick way to thicken up my drums without to much knob turnin. and how would that set up work. help me out guys. thanks

i think the akai 12-bit sound will help you some, but you can actually sample at 12-bit in the mpc you know. the thing with the old skool 12-bit sound is that it's a combination of sampling from vinyl and the sound of the 950, i think alot of producers used to sample quite 'hot' as well and get a little distortion in there. I gotta another interesting tip for ya'll to, due to the fact that those old machines were limited in terms of sampling time, loops would be sampled at 45 plus 8% off technics (even if it was a 33) and then slow the sample down in the 950, this was to be economical with the sampling time, this was more than just a time saver though because by doing this the sample has a certain sound to it, it's like sprinkling the sample with magic dust, but hey, don't just take my word for it, i read it in a article with uk producer mr scruff, besides try it for yourself, it's a cool trick

There have been numerous posts about Rupert Neve's Tape Emulator. I'm wondering what some good ole fashioned boom-bap would sound like, running through one.

i have a feeling the 950 is what you need. for me the s950 is magic on kicks and snares. not just gritty, but punchy, it is an eq. they're so cheap too. if you can't hear one locally then i say just get one. most hip hop from the early 90s was either a 950 mpc60 or sp1200. sure, a nice console and tape machine help to say the least but the 950 is very important to that sound.

no amount of EQ, tape, tape sim or anything is going to give you the sound of the s950. i would use the MPC to sequence the s950. jeremy |
