U87...

The pre could be anything... They had an Avalon 737, and a few other pieces... it could have even been the console. Plus, Guru has his own rack full of all kinds of cool gear that a lot of people haven't seen before. But, I know it wasn't a Great River. I think they might have rented some Neve's from Dreamhire... I know there was rented gear for those sessions.

Are you recording Jay-Z? if not, let's try to figure out what the best pre is for YOU... what kind of sound are you looking for and what mics do you have?

we'll i'm not only looking for a vox channel, i'm looking for somewhat of a color piece.
thus my reason for want to give the GR a shot. will be used for vox and pretty much anything i dont want to sound like my ISA428. also curious about the sebatrons cause my budget is stuck around $1500 for the pre. i only need 1 channel.

i think the ISA is cool on my voice so i'm not beefing with it, but we're recording a lot of other people now so i want to expand my sonic options.

mics i'm have are a brauner c and at4060.

Well, you've got a couple good mics there...

I think if you got an API 512c in a lunchbox you would be a lot better off.... you'll then have the option of putting a bunch of different flavors of pre's in the rack at a much lower price in the future... In fact, you'll even have enough money left over to buy an SM7 to add to your mic collection.

People are hot and cold with the 525... you either love it or hate it, no in-between.

The Distressor is far more versatile... get that or an 1176...

Not to get so off subject, but does the black album sound sonically basement-ish to you? It did to me. That album and Nellyville sounded worse than most of the albums that I produce.

Now if I could get a hit, .....hey maybe that's what i'm doing wrong....I'm going to make my music sound quality wack again! Look for me at next years grammy's.

if we are talking about the fade to black DVD... I think Rick Rubin was using a ELAM251 (or something that looked like it)... 47s are large fat, grey and stubby... he was using something long and rounded.... I also spotted a U87 in some of the other studios..... but alot of people like the obvious C800G... for me, I'm a big korby supported and love my Convertable with the 47 or 67 capsule... they even got a C800G capsule!
