Start with the booklet. It has a lot of info (not on gear but on who did what).

I think most of it was recoded in D&D studios in NY (basically DJ Premiers home - he purchased it and renamed after a friend who unfortunately passed away)

i think Joe Quinde was the engineer on a lot of it...most of it was at D & D Studios.

on a side note, what happened to Joe Quinde? He did a lot of good stuff back then. Anyone know where he's at now?

I saw the original track sheets a few years ago for a couple of the songs...

They were all done on 2", most of the tracks had drums seperated on individual tracks, with stereo sample tracks, and then vocals.

honestly the only hiphop i hear is that garbage stuff they play all day on the radio(which i cant stand)! and last time i heard a primo trak it sounded like most of his older stuff which didn't impress me, same kick same snare and same paino like samples. if anyone can link me up to some newer primo stuff i would be more than happy to give it an ear.

I personally find a lot of Primo stuff uninspiring myself, loved some of the stuff he did with Biggie and the Ganstar stuff and a few other bits. But yeah I find what I've heard of his new stuff to sound mid-late 90's sounding still. That may be a good thing to others, but I don;t see him pushing any envelopes now days.

Befor I get flamed...I have not heard that much new stuff.so maybe it's not a balanced view.

Have to say one thing though the way he makes his kiks and snares drop are defiantely written into Hip Hop history.

Relevant and on Top 40 R&B / Hip Hop

Ludacris last album has a Primo track called MVP. Premo got busy and so did Luda.

He is still relevant but yes he prides himself in his OG roots of sampling and doing the Boom Bap Kick and Snare deals. Its simple yet elegant, like a new Jaguar car with no rims. Just nice and classy with everything you need but not screaming "HEY LOOK AT ME" Like a Tahoe with rims and two tone paint and everything shinny with 5 screens in the headrest. Its just simple and efficient. And there is much more to it when you truly analyze it rather than passing by it.

This is an interesting question. WHY do we let labels dictate who is relevant in music? We may think it's consumers but only those who major labels shine the "light" on seem to be in the "it moment". I've seen guys track/mix a record at home in a studio to go on to become platinum in a few months and then 2 years later not be getting much push from a label and be treated as "not relevant" any more. We need to stop letting these people dictate this in the era of the internet. Artists can serve their own niche on their own now. It's like asking was Michael Jackson relevant? Prince? Isaac Hayes?

IT's even worse in hip hop. I hate the fact that artists now are practically interchangeable. Labels just shine the light on a new one and we give them our 2 min attention spans.

It's bullshit (sorry for the tangent fellas)

I'm glad that there is love for Preemo. At the end of the day he has his own sound and that sound will ALWAYS be relevent to fans and the artist who want that sound. Its the same as wanting a burger or wanting a big mac. Nobady goes around saying "man Mc donalds keep makinmg burgers that taste the same". To each his own I guess, but as for me, Preemo is one of the greats...period. Big ups to Dre for mentioning that MVP by Luda.
