tony! no vocal booth and sm57

it looks like im going to have to start recording more vocals at my place. i have no vocal booth and dont know when ill be able to put some sort of set up together. i thought i remembered a thread that you said you didnt have a vocal booth and you like the sm57 for that situation. what are your reasons and you think that would be the right choice. i want to get the mic within the next couple days. thanxxxxxxx

the 57 is good for that because of the pickup pattern...it has excellent rejection from behind the mic, making it a lot less prone to feedback from the studio monitors. That way you don't have to have everyone in headphones while tracking, you can just crank the monitors and vibe out.

The SM57 would be good, especially if you have a good mic pre with EQ... Sometimes you want to add a touch of high end. For $79 it's a good gamble.. works great for me with my GTQ.

Other than that, you could look at the SM7 and RE20... Any of these mics would work depending on the vocalist.

What pre are you going to use?

for the short time, just the pres in my 002 rack. however, soon im going to have to get my pre/comp/eq. i see myself ending up with the chameleon pre/eq and a dbx 160xt. im paying 2 mortgages right now and im not going to be able to spend much more than that. it could be a while also, so i might have to settle for this for now.

Wow, I happen to be stuck in halfguard's same situation without the booth. I'm stuck with a 57 and I like its isolation, but I'm not sure if I like the vocal sound. Weird thing is, I've recorded decent vocals on worse mics. Maybe I'm just rusty but do you think I should upgrade my pre? I use a SP VTB-1 right now. I thought it was a decent enough pre but now I dunno...

The pre is very important in this case....

I think it would be a good move to upgrade your pre.

Buy one and find out. If you have a crappy pre, it will sound like crap.

Never used one... but this thread is from 2 years ago, so... I think halfguard built a vocal booth already.

Who keeps reviving these old SM57 threads?
