The Mojave MA 200 and the Neumann U87 Ai Nickel. That doesnt mean i use them for everything. I try and match the singer to the mic or the mic to the singer and then that mic would be my favorite mic for that situation

Rode NT1a. Like it fine but I am moving past the mixtape/myspace promo. Not sure if I am going to mod it or upgrade but it's better than many give it credit for, IMO, though some act like it's a gift from god for the money.

I've never much been a fan of 414s on vocals. They do work sometimes tho.

414 or a sennheiser 421. but recently did a shootout with an NT2 and a sm57, just for laughs.

Our MC picked the NT2 as his fave, which i thought was because it was the brightest sounding mics.

I liked the 414, but that might be because i've spent the best part of £500 on it!

However i also liked the grittyness of the 421, but the difference between the 421 and the sm57 was much smaller than i thought it would be.

Really Chris? Wow... This comes from you..? What mics do you own?

At our studio we have a few good mics...
Brauner Phantom Classic
Shure Sm7b
CAD E350
Sennheiser 421's
SE 2200T
an Oktava
a few other chinese mics
And Idk what else... I'd have to check.

Now my favorite mics on rappers that I've tried have been...
CAD E350
Neumann U 87i and ai
Neumann U 47
Neumann TLM-103...

The TLM is at the labels studio and the U87 we can get on loan anytime... CAD is at our spot... and the 47 well... I gotta pay to play if I wanna use that one :p

I haven't tried the classic yet, but will once we get our booth built... I'm excited to hear it on rap vocals.

Bluebird threw ISA one freakin awesome I know people thing cheap mics won't compare, but my setup is greeeeeat!

My blueberry is cool very transparent, the bluebird has more vintage character to me and get used more.

I used to use the blueberry all the time till my artist heard my Alesis am61 tube Mic it killed the bb.

But the bluebird is closer to a tube some how?

He asked what we're using personally, I understand price being a problem :/

Right now, I can't afford some things either :(

Still, what "we" use can vary... twice, I went with a cheap Chinese mic last month when recording two rappers... External de-esser was on the chain, but those recordings sounded the best. Now there's an Sm7b at the studio and I'm excited about using it to record my buddy :D

I highly recommend people work with others in sharing and borrowing gear, musicians and engineers with talent can get a far way with just being kind and respectful.

Peace,
Min
