$6 Speaker Stands

I was reading in Studio SOS section of Sound on Sound magazine and saw that this dude had stacked his speakers on concrete slabs. I know that a very dense and rigid surface is desirable for speaker placement and since I was in the market for speaker stands, I thought I would give this a try. I picked up six cinder blocks at home depot for less than 6 bucks. I placed the first block horizontally then stacked the other two end to end vertically on top of the first. It just happens that when I placed my monitors on top, they are at the perfect height for my listening position. Not the most elegant solution, but they don't look half bad. I have the flat surfaces facing the room. My hommie commented that my work station now looks like some sort of alter. The squares in the cinder block also make handy cubby shelves.

to make it look nice just put a nice soft fabric on top to cover up the blocks.

Good idea. I'll loose the shelf space though.

I'm 5'9". If you are much taller, you could stack a couple of bricks or maybe those auralex speker mounts on top to raise it up a few inches. I wouldn't want to go too much higher like:

Seems like it may become a little unstable, especially since I live in earthquake valley. A small tremor may bring them crashing down.
