When mixing the low end, how many of you use a sub harmonic filter?

In my process of trying to be a better engineer, I'm still learning about the many different ways to skin the cat. While talking about mixing the low end, a partner of mine mentioned to me about using a subharmonic filter. It was the first time I'd heard of such a thing and honestly, I don't know if I should feel embarrassed about not having heard of it. Should I? Anyway, I was hoping you guys could give me some more indepth input on what it is, and when and how it's used.

I'm not sure about filtering out the sub-harmonics, but I know that by boosting and adding to the subharmonics, the bass can increase greatly. Some syntheziers have this function and you can really hear the difference. Basically you take the harmoics from an octave lower and boost it so that it adds more bottom end.

I belive that filters such as renaissance bass or maxx bass by waves do such a thing.

I remember hearing that many jungle producers use a lot of extra subharmocis to get that crazyy wooferpumping bass.

Anyone care to chime in?

dbx 120 ds can work really sweet at times. beware! you need and room and reference speakers that enable you to actually hear the subs. otherwise dont bother.

A subsonic filter and a subsonic synthesizer are 2 very different things.

i believe maxxbass is best used to take your loooow bass and generate higher frequencies which give the impression of bass so super-lows register on a wider range of monitoring situations. for instance, you have some crazy low bass that only works on a sub and using maxxbass you get the bass "impression" on something like bookshelf speakers.

bass is a touchy range and i think it's usually better to get something printed that works instead of trying to fudge it later. unless you want to sort through lots of mud. now running something with a higher register through an octave generator (ie. octave multiplexor by EH) can give great results, but that's more of a pre-production thing.
