pro tools master always in the red?

hi

this is one of my first posts, im a sound design student, hiphop producer, dj, etc.

im working on some old tracks for my group, trying to make them sound a little better then the first time we did them.

re recorded some of the beats, seperated some elements that werent previously seperated, etc.

this is my problem....working on a track with like 3 or 4 mcs my pro tools master is always in the red!! I dont really have this problem when im doing beats by themselves, nor when I make mixtapes....only when working on tracks for my group!

it seems like no matter what I do, the master just stays in the red. for example, I may mute out all drum parts, but then the vocals are pushing it into the red!! this is very strange, because my tracks are all recorded well, none of them are too hot, and I havn't even applied much compression or eq at all

does anybody else have trouble mixing multiple mcs and beats in pro tools?

for an example of our stuff, check myspace.com/812dirtysquad

thumbsup

you are overloading the bus. when u start mixing try to start with the first few faders peaking about 3/4 the way on the master. then as you blend in the other tracks you should have enough headroom to avoid clippin'

good method, good look. thanks.

I only have this problem with these mcs. I think a lot of it has to do with in-consistent vocal performance...its hard to control it coming from so many different sources

Make sure pre-fader metering is un-checked. (Operations>Pre-Fader Metering.)

You should also do some research on compression. Your dynamic range is too wide. I would also recommend bring down the faders!!!!!
