I have been watching gearslutz forum for quite sometime. I have seen and read discussions on many topics involving various equipment. Logic is better than DP, Protools is better than everything, Cubase is better than Sonar. The mpc is better than the computer, or the computer is better than the mpc. But here is the bottom line, todays equipment is far more advance than anything from the 60's,70's,80's,90's and even the year 2000. But yet music from the earlier era is better than anything being recorded today. Why do I say this, I say this because back in the earlier era, you had to be good at what you did. Talent was the main factor. A keyboard player, had to know how to play, a guitar player had to know how to play, so forth. But the main thing about that era, was the songwriting, the songwriting was great. The melodies were off the hook, and the hooks you would never forget and once you heard the hook, you were hooked, that is why it's called the hook. So I am saying all this to say, is that if you songwriters, beatmakers and so forth focused writing great melodies and hooks, you will be successful. You can recorded on the least expensive equipment, it does not matter. The buying public does not care what and how it was recorded, it's all about does the song reach them from an emotional stand point, and if it does you have a hit.

you hit the nail... I was just thinking about this over the last few weeks and much more in the last few days. I am into all types of music really, and just happen to think that music was much better 10 years ago. Maybe not sonically, but musically for sure. |

Although you make a valid point... you have to understand that the Artist doesn't have the final say in what makes the Album... If the Major doesn't get it... odds are the world wont have a chance to get it... The last few beats I moved were made 3-4+ years ago... to add to that... a lotta Rappers and Singers pick the worse beats you play them (you know the ones that you really dont like)... Anytime I'm working with a client I respect I throw in a beat or two for free that I think will compliment them ( and I could careless about paperwork... we'll handle that if something pops off)... besides that... you have copies... and theres nothing like a look on a prospective clients face when you tell them you worked with XYZ artist... and you play them some unrelease material... esp when you know they're dying to ask for a copy... 1/2 the time I make music for musics sake... the more I experiement... the more I feel like I'm learning (by pushing myself creatively...) Making music to please others causes too much stress... nowadays I just do me... what feels right, fun and exciting... and what comes natural... |

"But yet music from the earlier era is better than anything being recorded today." as much as I agree with you, better is always always always subjective. do you really think the kids today want to listen to The Beatles? no doubt they made great music, but as time changes, so do the perception of what is "good". i'm only 22 and I recently bought Keyshia Coles album and I really dig her voice. My mom on the other hand heard her and said "there's no way someone that sings as terrible as her would get away with it when I was growing up." and i am willing to bet money that when I have kids of my own, i'll say the same thing about the music they think is so great. time is the most powerful force in the world btw, i love old music. jamerson for life |

Say you make a beat/production for <artist x>. The sh*t goes on to become THE #1 hit of the year. 'We'll hande that..' will be impossible because of managers who act like they don't know you, artists saying 'I co-produced this sh*t' and basically money hungry sharks who'll be like 'f-ck it - I see a way of getting money I'll say I made the music' Even if you make a short contract stating: I (Producer) give you this beat You (Artist) make a song The right to commercially release the song can only be attained when we (Producer + Artist) sign a contract that at least states: I (producer) get 100% publishing for the music (50 of all publishing) That way you have some form of certainty.. I understand u ain't tryna get TOO legal on they azz.. but protect urself and ur talent.

Mitch... I feel what your saying... but on another note... Both my Lawyers and the Company that handles my publishing KICK ASS... true they kick, scream and cuss me out when I do things like this... BUT... they know it's their job to FIX whatever problems arise... I'm a really smart Business Man and I like taking Risk esp if a song only took an hour to make, and they know if I want to do something I'm gonna do it... They are paid to make me happy and cover my ass when necessary... and they know that... .... People enjoy working with the small guy... cus we make things happen quick fast... no political Red Tape or Bureaucratic mess... Dont get me wrong... I've been burned in the past... now I just make sure they give me a dollar and a handshake... and basically a deals in place... For me... Women, Money and Things are just perks from making music... I dont make music to get Women, Money and stuff... |

THIS thread is the TRUTH. BUT where are the TALENTED PEOPLE? Labels sign the bullshit, because the bullshit artists had enough drive to go out and independently create a market for what they have to offer. All the TALENT is at home saying "THE game is ruined, I hate what's out" ON some primadona shit. HE who has the most hustle EATS. Unfortuonately it's not he that has the most talent at this point. THe days of A&R are forever gone. Labels wont put money into something unproven when something else has a proven market. It's like placing a safe bet. SO IT Lies in the hands of the talented FOLK to make it happen. Which side do YOU represent |

as much as i love Stevie Wonder and Earth Wind and Fire, I know that most people my age don't. I'm more into that music cause i'm a musician myself, so I can appreciate their art. but do you think the 14 year old girls care one bit about those cats? nope. they think mike jones and d4l are talented.
