I've got a pair of Tannoy System DMT II's powered by Yamaha amps with a pair of 18" JBL subs powered by Manley tube amps. The system rocks, shakes the building when turned up !!!!!

If you have the budget dual 15" Ausberger cabinets with TAD components is the best way to go for rap & r&b imo. This setup just kicks complete ass, and will knock a hole in your chest when properly tuned. The whole thing should run about 20k.
You'll need-

2 custom fabricated cabinets. (I know a guy in Atlanta that builds exact copys, IM me for info.)
4 TAD 15" drivers
2 Ausberger horns with drivers. (The guy that builds the cabs can get them from Ausberger)
1 Bryston 4B Amp for the horns
2 Bryston 7B Amps for the woofers.
1 White room equalizer / crossover
Enough monster speaker cable to run the lines.
Proper soffits for the cabinets. Cement is best, but dense wooden framing will work. They will sound much better with a solid base to the floor below them rather than mounted above glass as well.

One thing I would definitely recommend with this setup is to aim the focal point about 5 feet behind the mixing position. These babies are capable of incredibly high sound pressure, and it's much more comfortable to be a few feet in front of the sweet spot than right in it at extreme volume. That way you can always slide back into the focal point if you want, but can also blare them for the people in the back without frying your eardrums. Cheers.

You get a "Tony Point!"

Although, I don't know why you would recommend the White units??? I use XTA's... Also, I prefer to use 1 x 4B and 2 x 7B's...

Not to sound like I'm trying to sell something, but I sell custom Augs-style monitors that are in Timbaland's studio, etc. I can have them made in any color you want... High gloss black? or how about fire red?

If you got $20 or 30k laying around for some mains.... go with the Augspurgers.

If you have $5-10k, then get some Tannoy DMT215's...

If you have under $5000, then look at some Genelec 1032's or powered Mackies sound reinforcement speakers if you want it loud.

Tonys right about the amps, my mistake. The EQ is a personal preference, but the White, or XTA's are both tight.

for a really cheap budget, i have a big pair of event 20/20's at my house, and they remind me a lot of genelecs or pmc's.... usually, whatever i heard in the studio on the genelecs, is exactly what i get at home on the 2020's....ns10's i like just to have to see what bass will translate to thinner monitors...in my experience, the only speakers i really CANT deal with are westlakes...to me they are a world of their own, yet we got some guys that SWEAR by em...

i dont know, they got this midrange thing going on, that puts mixes in a world of their own.... very "crunchy" -----i don't see how people can hate the 2020's that much... i hear them to be a lot like genelecs, as in VERY responsive to the bass, and a slightly hyped upper end...the ONLY thing about the 2020's, is the mids definately don't come thru as well as they should, but often with genelecs, when you switch to the ns 10's, you'll hear things in the mids you didnt know were there...i don't know, maybe cause i've heard people bad mouth em so much, and when i hear em i'm always reminded their not THAT bad!!

Westlakes always sound "honky" to me for lack of a better word. Sounds like my mix run through a very large car horn.

The first time I heard one of my mixes on the Westlakes I felt similar until I popped out the cd and listened to a couple of ref. favorites. Then I realized the mixes needed a little more work. I had been using JBL LSR-32's w/sub at the time for mid-fields. Maybe that was the problem although I've been told the new ones sound better (6332 I think).

If your gonna have some Ausperger speakers than it might be worth it to look into having him design your room.

When using soffit mounted speakers the most important factor is that the room should be built around them.

This is common to a lot of the Ausperger rooms which are some of the best sounding.

I can tell you how many world class rooms i've been to that had the most horrendous sounding "bigs" because they were added after or to please the clients.

i heard the Ausperger's at www.luminoussound.com
I was impressed. I never heard mains with that much low mid/bass detail. It was a rock song so I didn't heard the real low end. I also liked the 1039's in the B room kinda like bigger, slighty more detailed Mackies....on some Kirk franklin's stuff and another cat's rap stuff.

Ausperger Monitors

Hey guys, I was breast feed on these. I am a lucky man for this. Originally, in the early 80's, I worked in a room that had Ausperger monitors and was lucky enough to have them tuned by HIM. THE MAN. I watched and listened as he tuned the room, and actually remember saying to myself "How can that old shit tune a room, he is an old guy, what the MF could he know?" WHAT A SMART ASS SHIT FOR BRAINS I WAS! (****ING IDIOT) I, like a lot of engineers these days think we are so smart. I have only mixed in Ausperger monitors since. MySpace.com - Jon Gass Producer-Mixer- Engineer-Protools - Toluca Lake, California - R&B / Hip Hop / Country - www.myspace.com/jongasscom
It takes many years and many excepted (hit) mixes to start to realize we don't know shit. The mix BIZ is an ever changing MF, only one thing matters, MONITORS! Your mixdown monitors HAVE TO BE RIGHT!
The only way to have your mix translate evenly from every possible boom box to the jeep with the twin 15 subs is you gotta have accurate monitors. Remember one thing, Your mix room is a laboratory, not the living room or some really good sounding speakers. NS-10's Still Rock!
Oh yea, they Suck! "Hey Man, my mix sounds like shit on them" Hmmm, Well, its possible that your mix sounds like shit. They make you work hard to make it sound right.
Good monitors are designed to make you mix in a way that makes the mix sound the best on most systems, Not on what ever crap speakers you might have, its just the basics.
I have ausperger monitors in my private studio that are tuned by "Coco" aka. Steve Brandon" He is the MAN! Enough 4 now, J

For REAL!

Welcome JG!

I had the pleasure of having him mix many tracks I recorded,
and I learned a ton watching him work and trying to duplicate what he does!

I heard "Don't Be Cruel" in the 7_Eleven the other day!
STILL knocks!

This man has never gotten the media respect he deserves!

Jules......?

Tannoy DMT II's. You can get the 10 or 15's now for waaay under 1k.
Then you can afford a pair of Cello or Krell amps with transparent audio cabling.
If I had loot to burn, I'd find a pair of Manley ML10's...

IMO, the most important part of soffit mounted Auspurger mains IS the man himself showing up and tuning your room.

If you wanna get disco with the mains, get a pair of Urie 813's

i hate Genelec mains.

Go with the Ausberger/TAD/Bryston combo. if set up properly you won't be disappointed

other than that, i really like ATC SCM300s. They're probably some of the best sounding mains i've ever heard. unlike most mains, they sound good at any volume, and I have no problem mixing on them.
