Kanye West and Jermaine Dupri not nominated for producer of the year? WHY

These are the nominees and no doubt they are all great... but how could kanye or dupri not have slipped in. They both produced the two biggest albums of the year Kanye (and Jon Brion) Late Registration, and Dupri (Emancipation of Mimi) as well as many others.

and to get a little OT who do you think should win out of this list. Personally I think its got to be Steve Lillywhite. The U2 album was great and the Jason Mraz album was one of my favorites of the year.

Danger Mouse
• Demon Days (Gorillaz) (A)

Nigel Godrich
• Chaos And Creation In The Backyard (Paul McCartney) (A)

Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis
• Be Blessed (Yolanda Adams) (T)
• Dance With My Father (Celine Dion) (T)
• Harajuku Girls (Gwen Stefani) (T)
• Never Too Much (Mary J. Blige) (T)
• Nobody Cares (Deborah Cox) (T)
• Pure Gold (Earth, Wind And Fire) (T)
• These Boots Are Made For Walkin' (Jessica Simpson) (S)

Steve Lillywhite
• How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (U2) (A)
• Mr. A-Z (Jason Mraz) (A)

The Neptunes
• Already Platinum (Slim Thug Featuring Pharrell) (T)
• Hollaback Girl (Gwen Stefani) (T)
• Let's Get Blown (Snoop Dogg) (T)
• On & On (Missy Elliott) (T)
• Say Somethin' (Mariah Carey Featuring Snoop Dogg) (T)
• Touch (Omarion) (T)

Kanye didn't produce much but his whole album, so that's why he didn't get nominated....

As far as JD... He had a couple hits, but the Neptunes get the knod. That Gwen Stefani song didn't hurt, that shit was huge...

in terms of rap production, even though that dude jon bryan produced kaynes album, west still made most of those beats, which is more than I can say for jermaine dupri. this guy is a joke. seriously. i read an article with him and he even admitted to not making beats, that he is more of an arranger and he gets the most out of his artists. thats a load of bullshit to me.. if hes not working the boards, controlling the sound, or making the beat, I dont really wanna hear that he is producing, cuz he isnt doing anything except putting his name and face behind a project that he did nothing to make sound and feel the way it does.

And the winner is...

Nigel Godrich!!!

Not really for the Paul Mcartney album, but when he was nominated in the past for RadioHead album he didn't win.

Are you saying that if you wrote the beat, then you should have producer credits?? In my book (and many others) we call that the songwriter, not the producer. There's many great producers in this world that can't play a lick of anything, or even touch a fader or knob. How do you define a producer?? Now, don't get me wrong, I know there's producer's out there that write, perform, and PRODUCE albums. I just think that in the Hip Hop world, we're giving credit where it isn't due.

For example, if I'm working with an artist, I sit with him/her figure out which direction we want to go with the album. We listen and pick out the best beats from a number of different writers. Some were my originals, and some were not. We happen to pick one of your beats for the album. You send us the Pro Tools files, the artist has already written the lyrics for it. I tell him to rewrite a couple of lines because I don't condone bitch slapping or any abuse towards women. I make some suggestions regarding the arrangement, maybe write a new melodic keyboard part for the hook, have someone come in to lay some killer backing vocals, I work some harmony parts out for the vocalist. I'm in the studio bringin out the best in the rapper, making suggestions on what kind of voice/personality to use on the song. Making recommendations as to where to lay some adlibs. Maybe the artist is a little off on the 2nd verse, and I make him/her do it until it's PERFECT. Gotta be in the pocket baby! Let it flow! We finally capture a performance that we both agree is killer and move on to the next song. (repeat these steps until you have an album worth releasing).

So my question is. Should you get credit for producing the album, or should I???

Not hating, just making a statement.

Being coined a "producer" in Atlanta is obviously subjective, and bears no resemblance to the classic meaning of the term. In my book the likes of Quincy Jones, Phil Spector, Mutt Lange, ect. are true music producers, but unfortunately the "book" in Atl is written in a language that someone with an 8th grade education can easily understand. Go figure.

I think JD has done his thing recently...plus I've enjoyed alot of recent neptunes production . I can't believe JD wasn't nominated though he's put out some serious hits w/ Mariah and of course "Grillz"

Kanye I can't say the same for I didn't really enjoy his album...probably partially because I can't bring myself to support someone with such a huge ego

AZ deserves much more respect as a musician. Listen to Pieces of a Man. That has some amazing tracks, including his Intro (of course) Love is Love, Pieces of a (Black) Man, Last Dayz and other ones.... once the music industry has been sucked clean of crappy music ideas, then the true artists can flourish once again.

Pieces of a man was crazy hot... I used to love that joint. Other than that I like two or three songs from AZ's whole career. That's a one hot album every 12 year average.

This is an important statement. I had to fire my lawyer over this topic... He's from the school of rock and couldn't conjure up a contract in which I was both the songwriter and producer... In those instances I do everything that you just mentioned plus make the beats.

Sometimes people just buy beats and record vocals elsewhere, in which case I push for "Produced by Paul David and Joe producer" Cuz hey, I produced the music and Joe produced/engineered the vox. Nowadays producer and "beatmaker" seem synonymous in hip hop... It's odd to me but whatever works. Plus I like producer's fees, points, and mechanics better than a songwriter's advance. YMMV
