Thread Starter | MPC 2000XL Card Reader
Hello. I'm about to update my MPC 2000XL with a CF card reader. Where do I find a suitable one for cheap? If possible, I would prefer a European retailer. Thanks in advance! |

I've never installed a card reader on my XL but if some people know the answer for sure, it's over there : Akai MPC Forums - MPC2000xl, MPC2000 |

Most ebay card readers are USB based. those won't work. The Addonics one is IDE. That has a much better chance of being compliant.

mpc attachments are IDE so look for it - anything labeled "mpc" you are just paying for a markup - i believe there is a 5 in 1 card reader ide just look for it

The trickiest part is drilling new holes in the frame of the card reader [I haven't even gotten around to that yet, my reader sits inside loose, but it works so I'm in no hurry]. For the rest you don't really need to know anything about electronics, if you can/think you can install a floppy/hard drive into a pc then this is no problem. Make sure to ground yourself, i.e. touch something metal before you touch anything inside the mpc so that you don't fry anything due to a static charge, yea and unplug the mpc also ![]() Don't forget you need to flash the 1.20 os to the mpc first for it to work with card readers. You can find said at either of these pages: Forat -- Service MPC2000XL [just copy the file to a floppy and boot the mpc with it in the floppy drive] To connect it up just need to unscrew the bottom plate, and the front plastic panel on the mpc2k. If anyone wants I can see about doing a pic of how the reader is connected up. |

Buy this: 40 Pin IDE to CF Compact Flash Adapter bootable Card on eBay (end time 17-Feb-11 06:22:51 GMT) 40 PIN! and IDE cable. Make a front panel from whatever you want, wood, plastic, metal, and you are done. Will cost you about 5 EUR. Works 100%. Have made such for myself. |

I've got the addonics card reader, works great! Pay attention to the CF Card you get though, I believe the biggest you can go is 1 gig. Some brands of cards wont work, especially the faster ones. I got a basic 1 gig sandisk and it works. Might as well stock up on cards because the 1 gig'ers are getting rare and expensive.

Wow thanks szf! Yes some pictures would be very appreciated. Well this is the first time I'm going to work with electronics. You think I can do this myself as I'm a first-timer? How do I ground myself? Anything more than that to think of? Once again, thanks! |

I think you should be able to handle it no problem, but the mounting may be difficult.. That's the only good reason to buy a purpose made mpc card reader, I just think the prices they charge are way too high. Anyway I attached the pics of my setup, you should check out this mpcstuff vid aswell, as it will make things clearer than my pics can: The challenge is finding a way to mount the old bracket as seen in 2nd last pic [attached to the floppy drive] to the new reader, thats what you will need a drill for, if you don't want it floating around like it still is in mine. Regarding grounding yourself, just touch any metal on the mpc case before fiddling around on the inside of it. And best not do this on a carpet! How Do I Ground Myself? - Yahoo! Answers One more thing be carfeull with the note variation slider on the top of the mpc, if you flip the mpc on it's front it can break easily, the trick in the vid to use a pillow is recommended for this reason. thumbsup I would advise NOT to 'stock up' on the 1gb sandisk cards, the more people that hoard like that the less there are for others/the higher the prices go. Well maybe with the linndrum2 coming out later this year maybe it all doesn't matter so much either way |

| Gear addict | I had a few people PM about cable details on this install since posting.. So here is the info I forgot to mention before..
Here is the ata cable I used myself, still avail. from same seller (This was the cheapest I could find at the time.. non europeans prob can find this from other sellers for even cheaper): http://www.ebay.de/itm/35-cm-IDE-Kabel-Flachbandkabel-UDMA-ATA-33-1-Gerat-40-p-/220476467132 I also took a drill to the card reader recently, and finally got it mounted as well as I could, pic attached.. |
