What up fam .... just discovered the site today. A lotta knowledgeable people around here!

I know this forum is for engineers and producers, but I hope it's cool to ask some questions even though I'm not one.

Been writing lyrics / rhyming for some time, but just on my own ...... never really thought about pursuing it seriously. I recently showed my lyrics to a few people and got surprisingly positive feedback. I know that it's not just lyrics that make an MC, but maybe it's time for me to work with others and see what happens. Things are different now (producers selling their beats to MC's), but I'm interested in more of a group approach, where people work and create together on a long term basis.

What is your experience with having MYSPACE page? Did you make any connections or meet other artists you ended up working with?

I'm trying to find out what would be the best way to hook up with people who share similar musical ideas or vision.

...

Hey...

If you've recorded any of your ideas yet, try posting a link or mp3 here to be heard, i'll always listen to peoples stuff and have worked with a couple of people i met like that..

But i always like to hear the persons voice first, even before i chek the content of lyrics, flow etc..

But that's just me..

Show us what's up ... and good luck!

Peace.

Unfortunately, I don't have anything recorded.

Do you think it's essential? I know it would be much easier if I had something, but I don't at this point.

get out there and make some noise. u should be recording your ass off if you're serious. don't got beats? rock over instrumentals, whatever. there's no good reason anybody serious has no material to show. i know kids in the bridge, 16 years old that got 5 cds worth of freestyles and songs over other people's beats recorded... not to mention they're in ciphers and they're willing to spit whenever. get on your game, THEN worry about networking.

Real talk. You network automatically by being the shit, and having a lot of material for people to consume in as many formats as possible

So I'll basically need to either invest in some sort of a recording set up or hook up with somebody who has one (and probably pay that person).

I just moved too, so I'm brand new to the area (NYC) and since I don't know anybody, it might be better to get some equipment and try first on my own.

If you got a computer, buy an Mbox and an SM57....

Probably cost you around $500.00

It will let you at least get some freestyles recorded, etc.

I may on occasion talk about some of the products I am a dealer for in my posts.. and that's OK! I sell them because I like them. Not vice versa. It's more fun to talk about things you know and love, then things you don't.

also, since you're here in ny, u can check craigslist or the voice and there's a million little studios that charge next to nothing an hour. start recording those 16s, get out and meet people, etc.

I appreciate everybody's help.

I think I'll get some cheap mic and try recording myself on top of some loops or whatever. That way I can work on my flow before going to a studio and possibly embarrassing myself.

I have a GarageBand (I know I know .... but that's all I have) on my laptop. Would that let me record some vocals? I figured maybe I can use the built in loops as a click track. Is it completely ridiculous?

con?one, if you know of anybody who has a little set-up that might be willing to help me out, let me know. Thanks a lot...

I meant to use it for recording my vocals. That way I could have something to show people.

The loops that come with it are really cheesy, but maybe the additional packs you can buy are better, like you said.

Garageband is fine for putting ideas down and making quick demos and such.

If you wanna spend the least $, you can just pick up the Snow Ball usb mic from Blue (I think they are under $150), and just record away.

Thanks for the tip on that USB mic....

Since it's USB, I probably can't use any preamp, right?
