Can anyone tell me how to make the snares snap and pop similar to Dre's on Reason 3.0?

I could not make anything sound half way as good as Dres snares on Reason. If you have Cubase with some decent plugins...then you'd have more of a chance. But truely, hardware would be better. He does record to tape...so I've heard.

buy an SSL like Dre has. It's tough to get that sound without it...there is a little drum collection out called the Dre SSL series..maybe those are good drums..someone could pipe in who has them and say what they think.

i've heard those samples, and they are NOT good in my opinion. Whose to say whether or not they are really ssl processed. If u don't have any analog outboard to process the samples, i would say cop a 1/4" reel to reel recorder (or even a decent cassette recorder for that matter) and record your individual samples to tape running hot, then record off the tape back into your computer, will add alot of life to the digital.

In fact, if there wasn't Dre, how would anyone have ever made hiphop? It probably would have shriveled up and died cause no one could get a good snare sound. The sheep mentality in this forum has reached a state of self-parody. | |

yeah, Im a sheep because the guy asked how Dre got his sounds and I told him?? That makes no sense at all. If you can make drums as hot as Dre's using Reason and no hardware please let us know. The SSL is a valuable board for reasons such as making drums "pop". Any interview with Dre shows how much he uses the SSL for his sounds. I am just passing along the info I read him say..I don't think I need to be insulted for that. |

ur first obstacle in getting a big drum sound is going to be reason itself. I don't like to knock other programs, but honestly, i used reason for about 1 year and could never understand why my tracks sounded so weak. As soon as i changed up to cubase with plugins, there was no turning back. Although reason has improved to include better compression and a limiter, it still has that constrained muffled sound. The cheap versions of cubase sx are really quite cheap and don't lose too much functionality. Check out the demos, u won't be dissapointed. There are alot of good freeware plugins out there ( do some research ) and there's the other route. Reason's biggest flaw besides the sound quality, is that u can't even record audio into it, which forces you to rewire. Fruity loops is also a good option and it sounds good. peace |

You need Dre's finger pounding on an MPC...that's how.

1) good samples to start with; 2) run snare to Reason's compressor; 3) try highest ratio, slowest attack and fastest release, adjust threshold to taste that should start you off somewhere. rewire it to your fav DAW for more processing; then add outboard for even more. adjust sluttiness to taste

I usually use some sort of 1176 emulation (in protools) I set the the ration to 4 and make the attack around noon and the release around on the faster side, but not to fast. I usually like a gain ruduction of about -4db. This is my general starting point.
