standard drum kits?

just something that crossed my mind today...

how many of you work from preset drum kits you've already created?

how many of you create a new kit for each beat you make?

sometimes i feel i go really slow making beats because i want new sounds for each track...

I have alot of Kits. Some I bought, some I made, and some I got from trading with other producers. But I do try to make new kits in my spare time, but I think i'm alright for now!

im saying tho...when you start a new track, do you generally load up a new kit? or does a new song begin after you just get finished building a new drum kit?

do you have a set amount of kits you always load up?

naw i just load em up and hit the pads till i get some thing im looking for. i never start off a track by working on or looking for drums, i look for and make kits when i get in 'funks' and i cant create anything.

i usually jam on a previous kit i made or got. Once the hook has been established, i start swapping out the drums and tuning them/filtering them to fit the idea.

Unless I am sequencing breaks I tend to just get the rythem down with whatever is to hand as I like to work fast at conception of a track.

Later I will get into tweaking/layering/FX to get it just right.

That said there is a time in everyones life where an amen break is needed and nothing els will do

I'm always collecting sounds and then adding them to my banks. I've got my banks seperated by sound (i.e. Kick bank, snare bank, etc.) and I just pull sounds from those when I start to make a new beat. To mix things up, sometimes I'll start with a different sound (other than the kick like I tend to always do) and start building from there.

My partner bought an SP12 and we're now using this old little fella for all our drum sounds. We created 2 kits, one more of a "NYC"-Style-like and one "modern Dirty-South-like" one...

I usually work with my standard kits. Afterwards, if I'm not satisfied with the sounds, I replace them one by one..... I just need to work straight forward when I get new samples. Or to put it in another way, I always work pretty "raw" in the beginning, after the raw work is done I start with the finishing touches... e.g. changing the drumset, try another rhythm, try different basses, etc....

Well, works for me.... I'd hate it to be in the studio for hours and just looking for the perfect kick for the samples I've been diggin previously... could be that I'm a little bit impatient though, who knows

most of the time I power up the sp
the board and the technics
grab a handfull of records from the crates..skip thru them
fill the 32 banks of the sp with every open hihat, bassdrum, snare etc i can find

.... start playing around with the sampled drums until I find a
good sounding combination

doing it this way every "sampling session" turnes out with 3-4
dope drum patterns

i have all of the preset kits on the motif, the sampled kits that i've created on the motif, and all of my individual drum samples and sound fx in a cataloged folder for reason. sometimes i use different drums from any of those places or dig for new drums if i wanna try something new. when i create a track in reason i save the redrum patch so i can pull up the same kit again. but you'll notice that once you start getting a lot of placements labels will request tracks that sound similar to tracks that you've already done. in those cases i just go back to the same kit, or the same redrum file, or the same set of samples to recapture the feel. it just dawned on me that i dont have to reinvent the wheel everytime i step into the lab! building on and improving a sound that you call your own is the way to brand yourself in this business....the best way to do that is to start with some of the same drums at least half the time! hope this helps
