Help ID'ing snare drum sample/sound

Can anyone help me ID the snare that was used in this track. Its starts at about 0:35 in the video. I know most of the sounds are 808-ish. The snare doesn't sound like a typical 808 snare. It sound like it could be layered with a 808 clap. I've experimented with a couple different 808 snare/clap combinations and can't seem to find it. I hear this sound all over the place, but just can find it.

Thanks,

Can't seem to embed the video, so here's the link: YouTube - NEW 2010 Marsha Ambrosius (I Hope She Cheats On You)

Its to Marsha Ambrosious - I Hope She Cheats on You....

could be anything imo.
something similar shouldn't be too hard to create from a regular 808 snare though.

i would try pitching, adsr shaping and eq-ing a regular 808 snare.

I've heard this snare all over the place. I wonder where it actually originated from. The song is produced by Canei and on ustream he claims that he samples a lot of his drums. At the same time he works heavily with Just blaze so it could be from anywhere.

I think it´s pretty basic snare sound that you can find anywhere. I love how he layers different sounds with it through out the song. There is definately a triangle at one point and probably an electric snare and/or rimshot. At the beginning there is only a finger snap and at the end only a clap. It´s funny how little details like these make so effective changes. I should step my snare game up!

It's definitely not a basic snare. It actually sounds like an 808 snappy snare layered with a some kind of clap (not an 808 clap). I've gone through just about every 808 snare sample I can find to try to get something close. I actually think it's a sample of an real 808 snare that was pitched, tuned, and decayed with in the 808 itself. I used to have one a looooong time ago and remember being able to almost get that sound. Think Keith Sweat's "Make it Last Forever" for those of you who are old enough.

Also, to your point he does do a very good job of changing things up throughout the song. It starts off very melodic with a rhodes and a bell patch playing. You think its going to be a typcial Floetry neosoul-type cut and then he changes it up with by adding the bright synths and 808 drums to make it more Top 40 radio friendly. Then at the very end he flips it back to the live instrument where there's rhodes, live bass, and piano playing to close out the track. Dope beat. The lyrics are just a little odd though. otherwise hot track.

I researched a bit about his snare and decided that it is 808 snare, Roland cr 8000 clap, and short decaying Roland cr 8000 cymball. I think it's very similar to Keith Sweat's typa snare

Yo, this IMO is the POST OF THE YEAR! I've been trying to make this snare for years.

Thanks

lol... to get this effect you get a thick 808 snare and add freq between 300-600 hz, layer it with a clap and make sure they're both gated. don't use a bunch of compression. thats what i did. theres also a slight bit of stereo imaging on the snare not the clap.

this snare had 2 claps panned slightly left and right. 1 clap was the logic hip hop kit clap just gated. and another logic clap gated.

Good looking out! That's what up. And dude again, much respect. Your work is incredible and you can tell that you take extra care in the sound management department. Just like with this snare. Your work on Marsha's album was dope. Didn't you mix those tracks, as well?

Newbies and other wanna be producas, you better get your pens and pads out now are start taking notes, cuz none other than Mr. Canei Finch is dropping some science in here!

yea i done a couple beat battles. my discography is on Facebook in my photo album discography. Canei Finch. I know a good deal of producers and engineers too so it might have come up in convo. Ken Lewis is a good friend of mine.

to the other question i did 3 joints on Marsha's album hope she cheats, lose myself and butterflies remix. i mixed butterflies completely and i mixed the instruments on Lose Myself not the vocals. But even if i don't get credit for mixing i still ALWAYS mix my beats before i send them to get mixed. matter fact i don't send complete multis anymore. just like bass, drums, main instrument, sub instruments... stuff like that. i know how to mix and i don't like people changing my sound, like my kick in relation to the snare and hihat, so i just bounce them altogether. And when i send it people usually say it sounds good and use it as is most of the time. you give people too many options and they start changing everything. but you have to know what you're doing before you can deny some record label the files to a beat.

Funny title for a song, 'i hope she cheats on you with a basketball player', lol

I'd say its an 808 snare with maybe like a faint side stick layered in there at a low volume.

The producer who made the beat said exactly what he did a couple of posts above. Nice beat and snare Canei

It's still crazy to me that a snare like that can have so much work put into it. Production is an artform I'm proud to be a part of.

@Canei Finch

With "Lose Myself" being my favorite song on the album,

would you care to elaborate on how it came about production wise?

Loving how you flipped the chords from Lauryn Hill's version.

Thanks.

i'll give you the short version. on Lose Myself... Marsha came up with the original chord structure and melodies. she sent me a ruff of her vocals, pianos and stuff. I took what she gave me and fully produced it. Once i had most of the track already done she got back in and recut the vocals. Then i finished up the rest of the track according to her vocals. Every instrument is from logic or a vst and played by me. Probably hard to believe but all that stuff i did right in Logic. I used addictive drums (xln audio) for hihats, toms, crashes. that logic session might be like 80 tracks worth of stuff.

Wish i could break everything down but the way Marsha and I work together is just magical. theres no technical breakdown. the beauty and genius of it is just what i decided to play as far as chord structure, drum programming and sound selection... and what she decided to do as far as melody and performance goes. She is a beast performance wise. And im just good enough to keep up with her production wise so it all works out. All i know is I'm blessed to be able to work with someone with such an incredible ability.
