Audio Technica Mics

I seen a closeout sale on some Audio Technica AT4033 and 4040 mics for $300-250. Has anyone used these mics for rap or r&b vocals? Is it worth getting.
( I am currently working with a U87 and 414TLII-planning on getting a Blue Dragonfly mic. )

AT4033 might work exceptionally for some Rappers.

It has nice presence and bite. If the money isn't really a big deal and you are looking to expand your collection, I'd very much suggest it.

I don't like the 4033 or 4040, really.

I like the at4060, at4047, at4050, and at3035...in that order.

Try before you buy.

I bought a 4033 or $175 before, btw...sold it quickly.

Yeah, not a fan of the 4033... A buddy of mine had one for years and I really didn't like it at all. The 4060 is nice, though.

I may on occasion talk about some of the products I am a dealer for in my posts.. and that's OK! I sell them because I like them. Not vice versa. It's more fun to talk about things you know and love, then things you don't.

Also, why are you going to get the dragonfly next?? With the mics you have right now, I would suggest an SM7 or RE20 as the next purchase... Actually, you could buy both of them for the same amount of money as a Dragonfly.

Do you mean the Shure SM7 or SM57?

I already have a SM57 and 58, I was thinking about the RE20-but I heard those mics suck? I heard the dragonfly before, pretty good mic at the price. Seen a few for $600.

SM7....

Just a thought though... What's you preamp situation like? Do you have any API's or Neve-style preamps?

For hip hop vocals, you've probably got your microphone bases covered with the U87, 414, and SM57... might want to consider upgrading your preamps next if you haven't already.

Also, I don't know who told you the RE20 sucks. But, I can safely say it does not suck.... A very versatile and useful mic in any studio. You can use that thing on anything from vocals to kick drums.

Okay, I read a few threads on the RE20, sounds like I should look more into them. Just wondering, why do you suggest the RE20 over the Dragonfly? I never heard the SM7, is it good for vocals also? The only pre amps I use right now is a 737sp, Voxbox and the Focusrite pres in Control 24.

What about the blue mic cables, are they real good cables?

AT 4033a is what I'm currently using...you can get a listen on the link in my signature. This is going straight into a EMU 1820m pre amp (which is very clean sounding). Then processed with a UAD LA2A > Waves Ren Comp > Cambridge EQ.

I've never used any other mic so far...so can't really compare it.

Those cables are nice, but so overpriced when a $25 Canare will do just as good... Anyway, I really think now might be the time to switch focus to a new preamp that will give you those missing flavors. Something like an Aurora Audio GTQ2mkIII or maybe an API 512 in a lunchbox, etc.

i mixed a hiphop album a few months ago and the at3035 was used exclusively for the vocals... something like 4 different rappers and 2 singers. i was really surprised how well the vocal tracks sounded, given it's price point (like $200 or so, right?). the mic seemed to been strong in the upper mids, but handled them smoothly...

i don't own one, but i'd recommend it.

I own a AT4033.. I dont currently use it but I use to use it all the time for rap vocals. I think for vocals its 50/50. Sounds great on some people.. sounds OK for others. I really dont have anything bad to say about it. I might say for the price range its a great rap vocal mic but thats just my oppinion.

What about Universal Audio pre amps? I was going to purchase an API 7600, but now I'm debating on LA-610. I see they're getting good reviews.

Boom!

AT 4047 are great too!

If you hook up an RE20 and don't like what you hear, you gotta fix something, cuz it isn't the mic.
