help getting started.

my young icelandic friend is interesting in making hip hop and has no clue what to get. he has a small budget (around 500) and doesn´t have anything yet. what would you recomend he get?

an mpc would probably be the best choice but i think he wants to use a DAW so that he can have the option of recording live instruments as well as sampling.

get fruity loops 6 and a cheap midi controller like an oxygen 8, that's a good start. as far as vocals, get a used mackie 1202 and a shure sm58. at least you can do something with those items for very little

I'm with Tony on this one, grab the Ozone, but if you're on a PC I'll second the FL-Studio nod.

Additionally, you can pick up a Shure SM57 for cheap and record vocals on that Ozone.

Another good tip is if you have a UK hook up. You should get hold of a copy of Computer Music magazine. There's always a CD/DVD rom with loads of free software including DAW's and plugins you can make a whole software studio from all that stuff.
