protecting your instrumentals and yourself

?????

if you are sending out tracks to A&R reps at record labels, is it wise to tag your tracks or would you send them out as is.

I attached a track for an example
Attached Files
File Type: mp3 Thats Hot.mp3 (1.61 MB, 123 views)

i listened to it, and honestly, something like that is going to hurt you. the a&r, or whoever, is only going to pass it along if they're digging it 90% of the time. and nowadays, not only do rappers wanna write to it, but half the time they wanna record right over the 2track before they're sure if they like the song. (dave, you weren't there when they tracked your 50 record, right? i never heard my banks record until that shit was mixed)
is that the greatest? no... it's wack as shit, especially with the mixtape game where it's at, because as a producer, it paints you into a corner... but that's what it is. so to have a continuous thing over the beat takes away from it and makes it much easier to skip to the next track or next cd.
with all that being said, a small name tag or a drop ain't gonna kill anybody... as long as you can not distract form the track itself

i publish my beats with my ASCAP company, but you are always at risk. I hate tags too, like I couldnt make it through your whole beat I hate tags that much.

I have a freind who is doing really well right now, he was hooked up with an AR at Atlantic, and he would send him beats that were usually around 32 bars..enough to rotate all the way through so you could loop them.

Maybe a quick Tag in the build up/intro and that's it...if someone seriously bites my shit after I sent to to an AR, then fine, ill write more beats..whatever, somethings are just out of your control.

Maybe it just me... but that doesn't make sense... why wouldn't they be able to chop 2, 4 or 8 bars... loop that for the verse... chop the intro part (for the intro or bridge)... chop the change up for the hook... etc etc etc... then reformat the loops/sequences in the structure they want.... Hmmm... maybe I just mis-read the whole thing...

no..they totally could if they wanted. that's the risk. but, like I said these beats were going out to an AR who asked him to send him any beat he made. so you have to risk if you trust the guy or not. thats what it boils down to.

but to me, anyone who chops 32 bars from a 2 channel mix that most likely have reverb tails, and maybe not even a break with just drums is going to have a shit song....i like each verse to have a different feel, and I think with 32 bars its good enough to loop for a rapper to get on and see if he likes, but not enough for an entire well produced song...i know some guys reel beats that are entire songs..I believe Disco said thats what he does..he prolly has excelltn, trusted contacts that he knows won't bite his shit....its just different for each guy..i just hate tags personally.

Many record companies (and smart AR folk) don't just "accept beats" or anything for that matter in due to legal issues. They normally ask you for them. Many do not accept any tapes/cds/whatever to just be "listened to" anymore, because of legal problems.

Also they don't listen to them, due to the fact that today it matters more how a person looks and what their "image is" than anything else.

Not much... But the way to protect yourself is just don't give every herb on earth a beat cd. And if you do, that's the risk. Shit happens, but hey, scared money don't make money.
I didn't have anythink on banks' first album (we did a song but I got red spyda'd). The song we did didn't leak, which is cool.
